Slayer Guide
Introduction
Slayer is a members only skill. The key to Slayer is learning the enemy's weakness and killing it accordingly. You receive assignments from a Slayer master to kill a specific number of a certain type of monster. These assignments can vary from 10 Spiders to 230 Black demons, depending greatly on which Slayer master you choose. To get started on the skill, go to a Slayer master and ask for an assignment. He/she will tell you what monster to kill. The Slayer experience for each kill roughly equals 1/10 of the monster's life points. If you and at least one other person attack the same monster, the person that does the most damage will get half the experience and the one that inflicts the final blow will get the other half. If you do both, or attack it on your own, you get the full XP. Also, there are various monsters that can only be assigned and killed at certain Slayer levels.
Enchanted gem
When you first start Slayer you will get an enchanted gem. You can also buy a new one for 1 gp from any Slayer master. The enchanted gem has a variety of different abilities, including:
- Communicating with a Slayer master. You will talk to the master who last assigned you a task.
- Checking how many monsters are left in your task. You can do this by right clicking the gem and selecting "Kills-left". This feature makes it worthwhile to bring the enchanted gem along while working on your tasks.
- Asking the Slayer master his/her location.
- Asking the Slayer master for a tip about the monster you are assigned to kill.
- Inviting a player to your co-op party. You can do this by right clicking the gem and selecting "co-op options". By doing this you can also view invitations from other players to join a co-op party as well as leaving your current party.
Slayer masters
The Taverley Slayer master is the easiest and the Ancient Cavern Slayer master the most challenging. Higher level Slayer masters assign harder monsters and more of them per task. Each Slayer master has his/her own selection of monsters to give as assignments. The Slayer masters can assign you either normal monsters to kill or special Slayer creatures (as explained later in this guide). They will not assign the same monster two tasks in a row. Note: You can quickly request an assignment by right clicking a Slayer master and selecting "Get task".
If you receive an assignment you don't like, you can go to the Slayer master in Taverley to get an easier one. However, if your original task was from the Taverley Slayer master or if the task monster is one that the Taverley Slayer master also assigns [see list]), you cannot request a new assignment. In addition, choosing to opt out of your original task for an easier one from the Taverley Slayer master will reset your Slayer task count. The task count does not matter until after the Smoking Kills quest. After doing Smoking Kills and then five Slayer tasks, you will earn points for each task completed. Changing your task with the Taverley Slayer master wll reset your task count, meaning you will have to do another five slayer tasks before you can begin earning points again. Instead, after you have completed the Smoking Kills quest you can trade in the Slayer points you gain to cancel or permanently block a task, without losing your task count. See "cancellations"

* Turael will not assign Cave bugs to players with very low combat stats.
** You will only be assigned Vyrewatch after you have completed the Branches of Darkmeyer quest.
*** You must purchase the ability to be assigned Aquanites for 50 slayer points. Unless this is done, Kuradal will not assign them. This can only be done after Smoking Kills. You can toggle off Aquanites, however you will be required to pay slayer points again to re-enable them.
~ When Kuradal assigns a TzHaar task, you are given the option to upgrade it to a Fight Caves task. See the Slayer challenges section for more information.
^ These will only be assigned if the player has level 60 Magic.
Social Slayer (Co-op assignments)
Ever feel lonely while on a Slayer task or feel like embarking on a task with a friend? It's now possible to get a co-op assignment from any Slayer master! Before you and your partner can begin, the following requirements must be met:
- You and your Slayer partner must be members.
- You must either have no active Slayer tasks, or you must be on the same Slayer task.
- You must both have completed at least one Slayer task.
Once you meet these requirements, it's simply a matter of using your enchanted gem on your partner to invite them to join your group. If you're joining a group, simply wait until a notice appears in your chatbox informing you of your invitation. When it appears, right click your enchanted gem and select "co-op options," then view and accept your invitation in the pop-up box.
The assignments are the same as for a solo-task, and creatures will be determined by the lowest slayer level in the two-man group. For example, a level 20 Slayer teamed up with a level 99 Slayer would not be assigned Abyssal demons, which require 85 Slayer. The main advantage of co-operative tasks is that a creature killed by either you or your partner will contribute to the overall slayer task count, thus taking roughly half the time to complete a task. Competition for kills is also reduced, however Combat and Slayer XP is not shared between you and your partner.
Slayer Points in a Co-operative task
For those teams who have completed the Smoking Kills quest and are eligible for Slayer Rewards, they will find upon the completion of a co-operative task that normal Slayer points are distributed between the pair. Right clicking your enchanted gem or slayer ring and selecting "kills left" will inform you in the chat box how many monsters are left as well as your and your partner's respective kill counts.
The ratio of your and your partner's kill counts determine how Slayer Points are distributed. Some examples below:
- A slayer pair (Slayer A and Slayer B) choose a task from Mazchna in Canifis and are assigned 50 Wolves. Slayer A kills 24 Wolves, whereas Slayer B kills the remaining 26. As tasks from Mazchna reward only one Slayer point, Slayer B would receive the point as they killed the majority of assigned monsters during the task.
- A slayer pair (Slayer C and Slayer D) choose a task from Vannaka in Edgeville Dungeon and are assigned 100 Werewolves. Both Slayers kill an equal amount of Werewolves; 50 each. The 4 points which Vannaka rewards are equally split between the pair: each get 2 points.
- A slayer pair (Slayer E and Slayer F) choose a task from Kuradal in the Ancient Cavern and are assigned 200 Gargoyles. Slayer E kills 150 Gargoyles, whereas Slayer F only kills 50. This works out in a ratio of 1 kill for Slayer F to every 3 kills of Slayer E's. Hence the 15 points awarded are split into the same ratio of 1:3, which yields 4 points for Slayer F and 11 points for Slayer E after rounding.
Co-operative points and Rewards
As well as normal Slayer points, a team can gain Co-operative slayer points from each completed co-op task. 1 point is rewarded to each player regardless of individual kills. These points can be used for unique rewards, including pets and bonus effects during the co-operative assignment for both players. These rewards are outlined in the Rewards section on this page.
Slayer creatures
There are special Slayer creatures which can only be killed at or above a certain Slayer level. These monsters offer rare drops and better treasure than normal monsters. Locations for each of these creatures are discussed in the next section.

***Players can be assigned Ice strykewyrms as a Slayer task (despite not having a Fire cape) by purchasing the ability from any Slayer master for 2000 Slayer points. Players who possess a Fire cape do not have to pay this price, and, in addition, the Fire cape will add a +300 damage bonus to all of their attacks against the Ice strykewyrms while it is equipped. Mages will find that fire elemental spells inflict 2x damage against them as well, so long as the cape is equipped (as opposed to 1.5x the damage without it).
Locations
There are four main locations where the largest variety of Slayer monsters can be found:
- Slayer tower
Located to the north of Canifis and shown quite large on the world map. The fairy ring CKS will transport you very close to the tower.
- Fremennik Slayer dungeon
A dungeon east of the golden apple tree, which is to the east of Rellekka in the Fremennik province. The fairy ring AJR will transport you just outside the cave.
- Chaos Tunnels
Five entrances are located in the low-level wilderness north of Edgeville and Varrock. This dungeon is unique because its monsters drop more summoning charms than monsters located elsewhere.
- Kuradal's Dungeon
Located in the Ancient Cavern. The fairy ring BJQ will transport you nearby, after you have repaired it using 5 mushrooms and a spade. The Ferocious ring, obtainable as a drop inside the dungeon, will also transport you there. This dungeon is only accessible while on a task from Kuradal (requires 75 Slayer and 110 combat; see above), and you can only attack the monsters you are assigned to kill.
Minor locations include the following:
| Braindeath Island |
Accessed by starting the Rum Deal quest. |
| Dorgesh-Kaan South Dungeon |
Accessed at the south of the city, first floor, after completing the Death to the Dorgeshuun quest. Fairy Ring code AJQ takes you directly into the dungeon, but warns you'll need a light source. |
| Draynor Manor Rift |
Accessed through Professor Oddenstein's laboratory on the top floor of Draynor Manor, after completing the Ernest the Chicken quest. |
| God Wars Dungeon |
A dangerous dungeon north of Trollheim, where anyone not under protection of the Runescape gods may be attacked. Home of Spiritual Warriors, Rangers and Mages, it also hosts slightly higher level versions of common monsters. |
| Ice Caves |
The dungeon near Thurgo, South of both Rimmington and Port Sarim. |
| Jadinko Lair |
The dungeon north of Herblore Habitat, across the river. |
| Light Temple Path |
Accessed through the Mourners' Headquarters in West Ardougne, this dungeon is part of the Mourning's Ends Part 2 quest. |
| Lumbridge Caves |
Located in the middle of Lumbridge Swamps, marked by a Dungeon exclamation point. |
| Meiyerditch Caverns |
This dungeon is unlocked by the Legacy of Seergaze quest. It can be accessed from the Myreque tunnels under the Canifis pub, or via the long way from Meiyerditch. It offers higher levels of familiar monsters: Skeletal Hands and Zombie Hands count as Crawling Hands (or skeletons, or zombies), and Mutated Bloodvelds offer more of a challenge as well. |
| Mos Le'Harmless Caves |
A cave east of Mos Le'Harmless. Accessed by completing the Cabin Fever quest. |
| Mudskipper Point |
Beach south of Rimmington, near Thurgo. A mini-quest is required to access this area, refer to the Mogre Bestiary entry for a description. |
| North-east of Tai Bwo Wannai Village |
Southern Karamja's north shore, between Rogues' Purse "pothole" dungeon and Ardrigal peninsula. |
| Pollnivneach Dungeon |
Enter the well in the centre of Pollnivneach (in the Kharidian Desert) after completing the Smoking Kills quest. Masked Earmuffs required to walk through safely. |
| Polypore Dungeon |
North of the Duel Arena bank. Cross the bridge onto the island there and go through the cave OR enter the Fairy ring code BIP to teleport directly to the entrance. |
| Sewer Slayer Dungeon |
Located west of Castle Wars and east of the Poison Wastes, this dungeon is part of the Path of Glouphrie quest. |
| Smoke Dungeon |
Located in the desert (down a well east of the Bandit Camp and west of Pollnivneach), this dungeon is part of the Desert Treasure quest. Facemask required to walk through safely. |
| South Uzer |
An open desert area south-east of Shantay Pass, East of the bridge. Bring waterskins. |
| Sven the Helmsman's Cave |
Located in Fremennik Province, this is where you'll find Brine Rats. Accessed by completing Olaf's Quest. |
| Tarn's Lair |
The lair of Tarn the Necromancer. Filled with agility traps and other monsters, located in the Haunted Mines, west of Burgh De Rott. |
| Zanaris (Lost City) |
Accessed by wielding Dramen staff and entering small empty hut towards east side of Lumbridge Swamp, after completing the Lost City quest. |

Slayer Aides
There are several items you can use to boost your actual Slayer level so you will be able to kill Slayer monsters you don't quite have the level to kill otherwise. The effects of the level boosts will degrade overtime.
There are several items that will make your Slayer tasks much easier by providing you with an invisible boost that allows you to deal more damage to the monsters you are assigned to kill.
 |
Black mask |
Dropped by Cave horrors in the Mos Le'Harmless Dungeon. Slayer level of 58, a Witchwood icon and a light source are required. |
The Black mask gives a permanent boost of 15% Strength and Attack during Slayer tasks. It offers additional benefits from the random firing of its initial 10 charges. This effect stacks with that of Dragon slayer gloves. |
 |
Hexcrest |
Dropped by Jungle strykewyrms north-west of Ooglog. Slayer level of 73 required, and a player must have Jungle strykewyrms as a Slayer task. |
The Hexcrest gives a continuing Magic skill boost during Slayer tasks. |
 |
Focus sight |
Dropped by Desert strykewyrms west of Al Kharid. Slayer level of 77 required, and a player must have Desert strykewyrms as a Slayer task. |
The Focus sight gives a continuing Ranged skill boost during Slayer tasks. |
 |
Ferocious ring |
Dropped by monsters in Kuradal's Dungeon. |
This ring adds 40 damage to every hit you do on monsters in Kuradal's dungeon, acts as a Ring of life and provides five teleports there. |
 |
Dragon slayer gloves |
Reward from the Fist of Guthix minigame |
Wear these on any dragon Slayer task to gain a 10% attack boost as well as 15% more Slayer XP per kill. They will disintegrate after 1,000 dragons.A Slayer level 70 is required. This effect stacks with that of the Black mask (as well as the Slayer helm). |
These items are extremely helpful and are great things to have while Slaying. Some with keeping count of how many monsters you are still currently assigned to kill, some making getting around to Slayer masters and monsters easier, and others saving you precious inventory space.
 |
Enchanted Gem |
Buy from any Slayer master for 1 gp. |
Great to bring on assignments. Ask your Slayer master (the one who last assigned you a task) how many monsters you have left on your task, ask where your Slayer master is located, ask for a tip about the monster you are killing, or join/check invites/leave co-op partys. |
 |
NPC Contact Spell |
Must be on the Lunar Magick spellbook. Requires level 67 magic, and takes 1 astral, 1 cosmic and 2 air runes per cast. |
Allows contact with certain NPCs from anywhere, including all 6 Slayer masters. You can ask for an assignment (assuming you have the required combat level for that Slayer master). |
 |
Combat Bracelet |
Enchanted from a dragonstone bracelet. |
Informs you every 10 kills on a Slayer assignment when worn. |
 |
Karamja Gloves 3, 4 |
Reward from the Karamja Tasks |
Allows you to teleport to the Shilo Village Gem mine, close to the Shilo Village Slayer master. |
 |

Wild Jade Vine
After completing the Back to my Roots quest, players can grow a jade vine in Handelmort Mansion gardens - see our Jade Vine Guide for more information. After checking its health at maturity, it is optional to leave it alone until it grows into a Wild Vine, and then kill it for an extra 2,500 Slayer experience. Note however that the vine takes a while (a day) to grow into the wild version, and you must be wielding a hatchet and have a pair of secateurs in your inventory while fighting it. Note that it can also poison you. After you kill the vine, you will be given the opportunity to plant another one. If the seed does not appear in your inventory, just speak to Horacio.
Hunt for Surok
The Hunt for Surok is a mini quest that one can do after completing the What Lies Below quest. The mini quest involves chasing Surok Magis around the Chaos Tunnels in order to catch him. At the end of the chase, you will confront Bork, a level 267 Ogre. During the fight, Bork will attack you with melee, while Surok attacks you with Magic. Surok cannot be harmed, so just focus on Bork. When Bork has been damaged enough, he will call his brothers to help him. The four Ork Legions that are summoned will attack with melee, unless they cannot reach you, which in that case they will switch to Ranged attacks. After killing Bork, you will be rewarded with 5000 Slayer experience. Bork will also drop 5 Blue, 7 Crimson, and 2 Green Charms, as well as an uncut Sapphire, Emerald, and Ruby.
After completing the mini quest, you may return to the portal where you fought Bork to face him everyday. Note that you will only get 250 Slayer experience for killing Bork now, although all his drops remain the same. There is a 24 hour waiting period before you can kill Bork again, which applies if you teleport early or die as well.
Phoenix Lair
After completing the In Pyre Need quest, players can navigate the Phoenix's cave once each day for additional rewards (explained in the Phoenix Lair daily combat guide box). The player must head through each section of the cave gathering new cuttings from the trees, but after the quest, the Reborn monsters in the five rooms of the multi-combat caves are hostile. The Reborn monsters can block players and are very dangerous. You must carry secateurs, knife, tinderbox or other method of making fire, and have five empty inventory slots. After collecting the twigs, making the ribbons, fashioning the basket pyre and lighting it, the Phoenix will appear and attack! You can attempt to kill it once a day for 5 Phoenix feathers, 7500 Firemaking, 3000 Fletching, 1000 Crafting, and 500 Slayer experience, but the first time you defeat the Phoenix you will earn 5000 instead of 500 Slayer XP. Also, because you cannot be assigned to kill the phoenix, the Slayer mask will NOT work on it.
Rewards (Smoking Kills)
After completing the Smoking Kills quest, Sumona, a new Slayer master, becomes available. To get assignments from her you need a Slayer level of 35 and a combat level of 85. She assigns tasks at a difficulty level in between Chaeldar and Duradel.
More importantly, completing the Smoking Kills quest allows you access to a number of Slayer rewards, which can be purchased by acquiring points from Slayer tasks. All of the Slayer masters participate in the points and rewards system.
Points
To get points you must complete an entire Slayer assignment. After you have done 5 tasks, Slayer masters will start to give you points for every task you fully complete after that.
- Mazchna - 1 points
- Vannaka - 4 points
- Chaeldar - 10 points
- Sumona - 12 points
- Duradel - 15 points
- Kuradal - 18 points
Any Slayer master will reward 1 co-operative point to each player upon the completion of a co-operative assignment, which can only be used on co-operative rewards.
If you Taverley any task, you will have to complete another 5 tasks again to start gaining points. You also gain additional points at every 10th and 50th task completed in a row, receiving 5x and 15x points, respectively. It is recommended to get a task from the highest Slayer master you can use for the 10th and 50th task, to maximise your points.
Only co-operative points may be spent in the Co-op rewards section
Items and XP
- Buy Slayer XP - spend 400 points to get 10k Slayer experience.
- The ring of Slaying can be used to teleport to major Slaying spots: Slayer Tower, Slayer Cave, Pollnivneach, Lair of Tarn Razorlor, as well as check your progress.
- Buy runes for Slayer Dart - spend 35 points to get enough runes for 250 casts.
- Broad bolts and arrows can be used on Turoths and Kurasks.
Abilities
- Spend 300 points to learn how to fletch broad arrows/bolts - add broad arrow heads to flighted arrows, or add feathers to broad bolt tips that you receive as drops or purchase.
- Spend 300 points to learn how to craft a Ring of slaying using a Gold bar and a Slayer gem. The Ring of slaying is a handy teleport and progress tracker. The gem is returned when the eight charges are used up. 15 Crafting XP is earned from making these.
- Spend 400 points to learn how to assemble a Slayer helmet. The Slayer helmet combines a nosepeg, earmuffs, facemask, spiky helmet and black mask; making for the ultimate Slaying helmet!
- For a mere 50 points you can persuade Kuradal to assign Aquanites as Slayer task.
- Spend 400 points to learn how to deliver killing blows to Rockslugs, Gargoyles, Zygomites and Desert Lizards quicker as well as automatically using the Crystal chimes against Warped Terrorbirds and Tortoises .
- Spend 2000 points to learn a new technique to attack Ice Strykewyrms - allows you to get Ice Strykewyrms as a Slayer task without having a fire cape.
Cancellations
You can spend points to cancel or block tasks. These options are only available when you actually have an assigned task.
- Cancel - you can spend your points to skip a Slayer assignment just this time, without taking a penalty to your consecutive Slayer task count.
- Never again - this choice will both cancel the task (without penalty) and prevent you from getting the same creature assigned again. You can choose to have up to 4 Slayer tasks that you cannot get assigned. If you have 300 Quest Points you can block 6 tasks from being assigned to you. These can be removed at any point for 30 points, however the points used will not be refunded.
Slayer Challenges
Players who use the same Slayer master multiple times in a row have a chance to be given a special "Slayer challenge" instead of a regular Slayer assignment. These challenges are optional, and if given one, you can choose to forgo it for a regular task instead. There is no penalty for choosing to skip a Slayer challenge.
If you have completed the Smoking Kills quest, all of these challenges (except for Turael's) will award you with Slayer points, and count towards your consecutive task count.

Notes
Even if you do not manage to defeat TzTok-Jad, you can still kill 280 Fight Caves creatures and receive the regular Slayer experience for them. Please refer to our Fight Caves guide for more information on this event. |
Slayer Contracts
If you visit the Slayer Tower, you will encounter an individual named Markus who is camped outside. You can speak to him to receive a Slayer contract, which works in a similar way to Slayer assignments. Markus offers two types of contracts:
- A normal contract, which will not progress alongside a slayer assignment of the same creature, or
- A special contract, which will progress alongside a slayer assignment of the same creature.
If you do not have a Slayer assignment for any of the creatures in the tower, you can speak to Markus to receive a normal contract. However, if you already have a task for a creature in the tower, speaking to Markus will instead give you a special contract.
Contracts require you to kill a specific amount of creatures in the tower whilst carrying the contract scroll. Each kill you make in a contract will award you 20% of the Slayer XP you would have earned if you had a Slayer assignment for that monster. Upon completion of the contract, you can return to Markus to receive either bonus combat XP or an amount of coins. These rewards vary based on the type and size of the contract, and combat XP can only be awarded in the Attack, Defence, Strength, Constitution, Ranged or Magic skills.
Note that kills made on a normal contract will not also count towards a Slayer assignment of the same monster; they will first count towards a contract until it is completed. However, kills made on a special contract will count towards both the contract and assignment. You can choose to start a special contract if you already have a normal contract, but not vice versa.
Possible contracts and their rewards are listed below:
| Crawling Hands | 40 | 156XP or 2440gp | 200 | 865XP or 13542gp |
| Banshees | 30 | 458XP or 6300gp | 160 | 2592XP or 37296gp |
| Infernal Mages | 35 | 1606XP or 7770gp | 170 | 8661XP or 41891gp |
| Bloodveld | 25 | 855XP or 4050gp | 150 | 5694XP or 26973gp |
| Aberrant Spectres | 40 | 1836XP or 12720gp | 170 | 8661XP or 60006gp |
| Gargoyles | 20 | 1910XP or 7210gp | 165 | 17490XP or 65201gp |
| Nechryael | 25 | 2650XP or 13725gp | 180 | 21178XP or 109690gp |
| Abyssal Demons | 30 | 3858XP or 22980 gp | 200 | 28549XP or 170052gp |
Tips, Tricks and Notes
- Use a monster's weakness against it when in a slayer task. Try a few types of attack and equipment to see which works best for you.
- If an assignment turns out to be too hard halfway, don't hesitate to get a new one. You get experience per monster, not for an assignment overall.
- Start with the right Slayer master. If you go to one that's too high, you might have to go back to Taverley and get an even worse assignment.
- If you can't kill the enemies assigned by the Slayer master for your level (the one called by your enchanted gem), try training your combat to a higher level.
- For many assignments, there are variants of the monster that you can kill and it will still count as killing a monster for the task. For example, killing a Baby dragon counts towards your assignment just like killing a normal dragon.
- Using a cannon to hit higher does not affect the amount of Slayer experience you receive from a kill. So using a cannon is a quick way of training. The cannon cannot be set up in the Slayer Dungeon, the Slayer Tower, the Chaos Tunnels, nor Kuradal's Dungeon. Learn about the cannon in our Ranged Skill Guide.
- Training Slayer and combat go hand in hand. For each monster you kill as part of an assignment, you receive the normal combat XP as usual, as well as Slayer XP.
- If you complete the Tarn's Lair by defeating Tarn, you will receive 5000 Slayer XP. This can only be done once.
- For Dark Beast Slayer tasks, if you have completed Within the Light quest, you can change the location of your teleport crystal to the Temple of Light - allowing you to bypass using the Mourner's outfit and saving you 5 inventory spaces.
Cape of Achievement
Once you have mastered the skill and reached level 99 you may want to buy a Slayer Cape from Kuradal in the Ancient cavern.
Refer to the Achievement Capes guide for more details.
