Magic Guide


Magic skill determines what spells you can cast, to see all your spells click on spell book icon and this brings up the magic menu. From there you can select spells to cast. The color of the spell name tells you if you can cast it or not. If the spell appears black then your magic level is not higher enough to use it. You will have to practice on lower magic spells to level to higher spells. If the spell name appears in white, this means you are good enough to use this but have not got the required runes to cast it. If a spell name appears in yellow then you have everything you need to cast that spell.

When you want to cast a spell just click on the spell name, and then click onto target. Some spells can only be used on yourself or on hostile monsters. To know what a spell does just move your mouse over the spell. This will tell you which runes are needed at the bottom of the window. There is 2 numbers shown above each rune X/Y. The first number X tells you haven many runes you have and the second number Y tells you how many are required. If the number is in red Y then this means you do not have the required amount to use this spell. You may obtain runes from magic shops or from killing certain monsters.

Sometimes spells will fail to work. If this happens you keep your runes, you can recast after 20 seconds. Higher level spells are more likely to fail but as you increase your magic levels the less it will fail.

To cast a spell you either need to have in your inventory all required runes, in sufficient amounts, or if you hold a staff of the appropriate rune type, it will count for any number of that type of rune. For example you can cast Wind bolt with only 1 chaos rune in inventory and an equipped wind staff.

Also, keep in mind that some Items like staffs, hats and robes will boost your general magic skill.

Spell-casting success depends on your total magic skill, which is calculated according to the following formula:
total magic skill = to magic school skill + bonus from items
If you fail to cast the spell, you cannot cast other spells for 20 seconds.

Runes + Fixed Spawn Locations

Note: After introduction of wilderness there is many new spawn points even for most sought after high lv runes.

4 elemental runes. Can be replaced by a staffs. Theses staffs can be brought from the staff shop in Varrock city.

Air Rune in forest west of Lumbridge castle near well. 3 runes spawn behind luthas's house (Banana field) on Karamja island.

Low and medium level runes - Runes can be found in many places, the easiest way to obtain the low level runes is to buy them from the magic shop's like the one in Varrock. The high level runes (*) can only be obtained by killing the correct monsters.

This rune is required for curse spells.

On 2nd floor of in Al Kharid Scimitar shop and in the Varrock Sewers Dungeon. There is a place just west of Varrock Castle inside the gates where the body rune spawns.

Blood * (members) This Rune is required for missile attacks Search in Bestiary !! You get them from monsters such as ice warriors, and they are very rare.
Chaos * This rune is required for bolt spells Search in Bestiary !! There is spawn point for Chaos runes guarded by 2 Moss giants in wilderness.
Cosmic * This is required for amulet enchant spells. Search in Bestiary !! Spawn point is in the wilderness northwest corner. It is protected by ice giants and ice warriors. You can easily sneak by though at last Skrimzo say so ..
Death * This is required for blast spells. Search in Bestiary !!
Law * This is required for teleport spells. Search in Bestiary !!

This is required for strike spells

On table near kitchen in Lumbridge Castle and in the Varrock Sewers Dungeon.

Soul * (members This rune required for curse spells Only can be bought from the Wizard's Guild
Nature * This is required for object conversion spells. There is spawn point in wilderness on isle (one spot is 4 and other 3 runes you need telekinetic grab to get them)

Other Rune and Magic Tips

The fastest way to get runes is to buy them in some Magic Shop, but only if you can afford to. Alternately, if you can survive the fighting, the Dark Wizards in the stone circle south of Varrock's South Gate drop up to 12 runes of random kinds when you defeat them. If you're low level, watch out for the bearded Dark Wizards.

The wizard mind bomb drink in the falador bar will temporarily raise your magic 2 levels so you can practice with higher lv spell and get faster exp!
