Fishing Guide
Introduction - What is Fishing?
The fishing skill is one of the few non-combat skills that allows you make something from nothing by collecting fish as a raw
resource, similar to woodcutting and mining (each of which being a Gatherer skill). Everyone needs food to fight with and
fish are the most popular source, making it a very beneficial and profitable skill to have.
In this guide you will find out about each of the basic tools for catching fish and the locations in which you can do so, as
well as many other useful tips to help you on your way.
 |
If you are just starting out in Fishing you may want to pay a visit to Roddeck the Advisor in the building to the east of the Lumbridge General Store to learn about the
different kinds of fish. You can get a free fishing net from the Lumbridge Fishing Supplies to
help you get started. If you're starting out as a Member (or on the Members' Trial), you may wish to visit Nicholas Angle in
Taverley (north of the river), who can give you 10 Fishing Bait for free to get you started. He can also give you
recommendations on what you should fish, by simply right clicking him and choosing "Get-recommendation". |
 |
Basic Tools
Now you have a basic view of Fishing, it's time to don your gear and get out there! The table below will show you all the
necessary tools you may need on your fishing adventure. Clicking the tool names in the concise table will take you to the appropriate page for each tool in Tip.it's item database should you need more information.
 |
Crayfish Cage
When you first start fishing, the only things you can catch are shrimp (mentioned below) and crayfish. These small creatures can be found behind Lumbridge church, the pond between Lumbridge and Draynor, the lake south of Relleka and the river in Taverley (one of the first port of calls for new accounts). Taverley's river should be the closest to a bank. To catch crayfish, you'll need a "Crayfish cage", which can be bought in the Lumbridge and Port Sarim fishing shops and Lovecraft's Tackle(p2p) for 20 gold pieces. |
 |
Small Net
The alternative to crayfish is shrimp, which are found at the sea. One place to fish them is on the seashore near Draynor Village, just a little south-west of the bank. You can also catch anchovies with the net at level 15. If you are a member and have completed the Swan Song quest, you'll be able to catch monkfish (level 62) at the Piscatoris Fishing Colony, which give more fishing experience than sharks! More netted fish can be found in the fishing table. When you have completed the Deadliest Catch quest and have level 70 fishing; you can use the small cast net, which is a wieldable version of the small net. |
 |
Fishing rod & Bait
To catch sardines at level 5, you'll need a fishing rod and some bait. You can also catch herring in the same spot at level 10. To do this, right-click on the fishing spot and select the 'Bait' option. You can also Fish with bait in a river at level 25, catching pike. Cavefish become available at level 85, and Rocktails at level 90. These can only be found in the Living rock caverns, providing good experience and profit. The smaller fishing spots are for Cavefish, and the larger spots are for Rocktails (needing living minerals instead of bait). Be sure to watch out for living rock creatures! |
 |
Big Net
When you reach level 16 you can begin big net fishing. As well as catching mackerel you may find other things washing into your net such as oysters, seaweed, leather gloves/boots, or every once in a while a casket which can contain coins, gems, talismans or even a half of a key. Wearing a Skills necklace will increase your chances of getting a casket. Then when you get to level 23 you will also begin to find cod in your net. Once you reach level 46 you can start catching bass with your net or big bass if you're lucky enough (which can be stuffed and mounted using the Construction skill). |
 |
Fly Fishing rod
Next up is the fly-fishing rod (with feathers), only useable in rivers. You will need level 20 fishing to catch trout, and level 30 fishing for salmon. To fly-fish, simply click on the fishing spot and select "Lure". You will use one feather each time you catch a fish. Fly-fishing is good for power fishing because it has a high catch rate and can earn over 50% more experience per hour than catching monkfish. If you want to bank the fish, then Barbarian village is probably the best place; having a bank north in Edgeville. At level 38 members can catch rainbow fish by using stripy feathers. Stripy feathers can be obtained by snaring tropical wagtails (hunting level 19). |
 |
Harpoon
Next is the harpoon. Go down to the fishing dock on Karamja, located North of the banana field. Here you'll be able to catch tuna by simply right clicking on the fishing spot and selecting "harpoon". Next on the harpooning chain is swordfish (level 50) in the same spot as Tuna; however you will also catch some tuna at the same time. On the south-west point of Musa point you can find Stiles, who is more than happy to trade your lobsters and swordfish for noted versions. Members who reach level 76 can start catching sharks in the same spot as big net fishing. If you are p2p, you can obtain Barb-tail harpoons, which are wieldable; freeing up 1 more inventory space. That's handy isn't it? |
 |
Caging
You can also fish lobsters on Karamja. However, to do this, you will need a "Lobster Pot" (don't ask WHY they call it a pot...) which will cost 20 gold pieces from the Port Sarim fishing shop. Lobsters are a great way of making money. Many people prefer lobsters for training food, because you only need level 40 to fish and cook them, and they heal 120 life points. "Cage" is the first option when you click on the fishing spot. On the south-west point of Musa point you can find Stiles, who is more than happy to trade your lobsters and swordfish for noted versions. |
 |
Heavy Rod fishing
At level 48 fishing (after enough Barbarian Training), you will be able to catch Leaping trout. At higher fishing levels you can catch Leaping salmon and Leaping sturgeon. You will need a Heavy fishing rod, as well as any of these items as bait: Bait, Feather, Fish offcuts, Caviar, Roe. As a bonus to fishing experience, you will also gain a small amount of Strength and Agility experience. If you use a knife with a leaping fish, you will obtain 10 cooking experience as well as one or more of the following: Fish offcuts, Roe (Trout, Salmon), Caviar (Sturgeon) or nothing. The Roe and Caviar can be used on 2 dose potions to enhance them, which will heal a few LP as well as the normal potion effect when taken. |
 |
Fishing without a Harpoon
With 55 Fishing and more Barbarian Training, members can use their own bare hands to capture fish! This is exactly like Harpoon fishing, but you will get some Strength XP as well. Take note that to do this; you must have a Strength level equivalent to the fishing level that is needed to normally catch this fish. For example, Tuna requires 55 Fishing and 35 Strength to capture. |
 |
Vessel
When you have completed Tai Bwo Wannai Trio quest and have the appropriate fishing level you can catch your own Karambwan. First you need loads of Karambwanji for bait. Use a small net to catch them in the lake just south of the Tai Bwo Wannai village fire ring. When you think you have enough, grab your vessel and head across the log bridge and up to the north shore. Use a Karambwanji with your vessel to load it, then click on a fishing spot. Remember, you have to reload your vessel after each catch. Players who have at least started Fairy Tale Part II quest to access fairy rings can use code CKR for the Karambwanji lake, and code DKP to reach the Karambwan fishing shore. |

Members Locations - Recommended Training spots
It is often debated as to which is the best training spot for members fishing, dependent on profit versus experience. Here we've outlined some of the best training spots out there with recommended levels also. For other fishing spots (including these), you may wish to refer to Tip.it's Interactive World Map, which you can use to hover over the fishing icons to see which fish you can catch.
| Nearest bank: Catherby |
Recommended level(s): 40-76+ Fishing |
Recommended fish: Lobsters, Swordfish, Tuna, Sharks |
 |
Probably the most popular members fishing spot, as there's a
fishing shop right next to the fishing spots where you can buy and sell both fishing equipment and fish. At the fishing spots in Catherby you're able to fish with Small Net, Big Net,
Bait, Cage and Harpoon. You can catch the following things/fish: shrimp, anchovies, sardines, herring, oysters, caskets,
seaweed, mackerel, cod, tuna, lobsters, swordfish, bass and shark. It is recommended at level 40 to fish for Lobsters here, before working your way up to Swordfish at level 50, and Sharks at level 76. Not only will this provide good experience at these levels, it will provide a profit perhaps unmatched by power training areas such as Shilo Village. The nearby range also allows for a self-sustaining food supply, as you may choose to cook your catch before banking. |
| Nearest bank: Shilo Village |
Recommended level(s): 20+ Fishing |
Recommended fish:Trout, Salmon |
|
After completing Shilo village Quest, you can start fishing there. This is possibly the
fastest place for experience in the game, as the bank is very close to the fishing spot and the experience comes thick and fast. Here you can fish with bait and
feathers; however Fly Fishing is the recommended method, catching Trout and Salmon in the river. Should you begin to run out of feathers, the nearby Fishing store will happily sell you their stock of 1000 feathers, usually cheaper than the Grand Exchange. |
| Nearest bank: Jatizso |
Recommended level(s): 40-76+ Fishing |
Recommended fish: Lobsters, Swordfish, Tuna, Sharks |
|
To get access to this fishing spot, you'll first have to start The Fremennik Isles
quest. The fishing spots here yield pretty much the same thing as in Catherby, but you'll find the area a lot less crowded. The bank in the town is a slightly shorter run than Catherby's fishing spots, however the area doesn't have a cooking range. Potentially due to location, this area is mostly abandoned, however for those who can access it, it appears to be a much better location than Catherby for those looking for a quieter area.
|
| Nearest bank: Piscatoris |
Recommended level(s): 62 Fishing |
Recommended fish: Monkfish |
|
To get access to this fishing spot, you'll first have to complete the Swan Song
quest. Once you complete the quest,
you can get to the Piscatoris Fishing Colony by boat (see Kathy Corkat located north-west of the Gnome Stronghold), or use Fairy
Ring coordinates AKQ.
The Piscatoris Fishing Colony is the only place in RuneScape where you can catch monkfish. In order to catch these
fish, you'll have to use a small
fishing net. You can also catch tuna and swordfish, provided you have a harpoon with you; however Monkfish are the best experience and profit. They are incredibly close to the local bank, and there are plenty of spots along the coastline for you to fish.
|
| Nearest bank: Burgh De Rott |
Recommended level(s): 76+ Fishing |
Recommended fish: Sharks |
|
After you have fixed the bank during the In Aid of the Myreque quest you might want to consider
staying a while for gourmet meals. No, not the snails that wander nearby! This town has plenty of big net and shark catching
spots just a stone's throw away from a bank, making it perfect for more experienced players. To get here take the Myreque
shortcut under Canifis pub, then after a brief walk south through the swamp hop in the row boat to Mort'ton. Walk south over the
bridge; it's just that easy!
|
| Nearest bank: Barbarian Assault |
Recommended level(s): 48-70+ Fishing |
Recommended fish: Leaping Trout, Salmon and Sturgeon |
|
The best way to get here is to teleport using the Games necklace to Barbarian Assault, and then go south. With enough Barbarian Training, you can catch Leaping
fish here. The fish cannot be cooked, and the bank is a fair distance away, so people just drop the fish. If you bring a knife with you, you can use it to cut the fish you have to get some Fish offcuts (stackable), Roe, and
Caviar. This gives you 10 cooking experience and the items you get can be used as bait to catch more fish.
Theoretically, you could get from 48-99 fishing with only 27 Bait/Feathers! Not only this, the experience is also some of the best for fishing in the game.
|
| Nearest bank: Living Rock Caverns |
Recommended level(s): 85-90+ Fishing |
Recommended fish: Cavefish, Rocktails |
|
To get here, you'll need to climb down the hanging rope in the northernly part of the Dwarven
Mines. Beware: this area is populated by aggressive rock monsters, ranging in level from 120 to a maximum of 200. This is
the only area where you can catch Cavefish and Rocktail, requiring fishing levels 85 and 90, respectively. Cavefish are caught
using conventional fishing rods and bait, but to catch Rocktail you must kill Living Rock Monsters and mine their corpses to
obtain Living Minerals to use as bait, or buy some from the Grand Exchange. These fish are the most profitable in the game, especially Rocktails, which though slow can earn a player millions of gold on the way to 99.
|
| Nearest bank: - |
Recommended level(s):70+ |
Recommended fish: Cave Morays, Salve Eels, Blue Crabs |
|
Wait, Daemonheim? That's right, some of the best fishing experience in the game can be found in the floors of Daemonheim. For low level floors which would otherwise be solo'd on a low complexity 1 (C1), it may be an idea to change to complexity 2 (C2). The reason for this is the Fishing skill becomes available on floors; fishing spots will begin to appear and nothing else. The sheer speed and amount of fish that can be found has meant this method of "C2 fishing" has become popular among many fishers, becoming even better with higher fishing levels. The only downside to this however is that all fish are lost upon completing a floor, so no profit can be made.
|
Fishing Table
This table shows you all the fish in Gielinor, as well as some useful stats such as fishing level requirement, fishing experience and locations. The level column shows the constitution level at which food will heal its maximum amount of life points. At lower constitution levels, the food will heal 20 life points less per missing level.

Agility Bonuses
With high enough Agility and Fishing levels, there's a chance that you can catch multiple fish at the same time! This only
applies to tuna, swordfish, and sharks, and you do not gain any extra experience for extra fish caught. This chance starts at
exactly these levels (there is no chance below them), but increases as your Agility increases, up to a certain limit. The
chance stops increasing after that level.

Skill Level & XP Boosts
There are several ways to boost your fishing skill level by a visible amount: a Fishing
Potion, a Fish Pie or an Admiral Pie. Your fishing will be
drained back to normal at the same rate that any other stat is drained after drinking stat boosting potions/beers. Also, players
who have completed the
Recipe for Disaster Evil Dave's stew subquest could potentially boost fishing by as many as 6
levels (or risk lowering the skill by that much) temporarily by using Brown spice while making Spicy Stew.
Summoning offers three familiars to assist with fishing. All three give an invisible
level boost, forage for fish, and may give a small amount of fishing xp for the fish they catch.

The Shark's tooth necklace is an experience boosting piece of jewellery, crafted from 5 Shark's teeth (obtainable as a possible reward from the Fishing Trawler minigame). To make a necklace (requires 91 Crafting; though it can be assisted), simply
use a needle and thread on 5 shark's teeth.
The necklace itself provides a +5% xp boost to Fishing when fishing for Raw Sharks. As well as this bonus, the necklace
can also give Sharks a chance to heal by 20 life points more than usual, as well as increasing the healing duration of a Baron Shark.

Fishing Urns
Urns collect fish scraps while you are fishing which can eventually be teleported away for free experience once it is filled.
There are five different fishing urns. Each urn requires a different crafting level to make and will give a different amount of
experience when you fill it up and teleport it away. Higher level fish will fill the urn faster than lower level fish, but the
experience for teleporting the urn away is the same regardless of what fills it up. Please view our Urns Section in the Crafting Guide for more detailed information on Urns.
Before you can start filling an urn, you need to activate it with a water rune. Adding the rune requires the same
crafting level as making the urn. You can have up to ten non-empty urns in your bank at once. This includes partially filled
urns, completely filled urns and anything in between. You can check the level of your urn by right-clicking the urn in your
inventory and choosing the Check-level option. It will also give you a message once it is 1/4 full, 1/2 full, 3/4 full and
completely full.

Fishing guild
You must be level 68 fishing to enter the guild. You can, however, get in at level 65, 64, 63... maybe even level 62! Just
drink a Fishing potion or eat a Fish pie if you are level 65-67, or eat an Admiral pie at level 63 or 64 or try making some
Spicy stew to enter the guild. For more information about the fishing guild, visit our Fishing Guild
Guide. For more information about fishing potions, check our Herblore Guide.
For more information about fish and admiral pies, see the Cooking Guide.
Cape of Achievement
Once you have mastered the skill and reached level 99 you may want to buy a Fishing Cape from the master fisher that stands
inside the Fishing Guild.
Refer to the Achievement Capes guide for more details.
