Barbarian Training

Introduction Getting Started Tasks Fishing (Pole) Fishing (Bare-Handed) Firemaking Potion-Making Smithing Ancient Cavern Credits Certain parts of this mini-quest are more dangerous than others. To see specifically which tasks involve more risk, look at the beginning of each task explanation. IntroductionThe Barbarians sure have an interesting way of life. Unimaginably different than normal civilization, to be honest. To learn the bare-handed-harpooning, fish-egg-potion-mixing, one-handed spear making, and ancient creature battling way of Barbarian life, all you have to do is complete some not-so-simple tasks. If your only goal is to reach the exciting, rewarding (and dangerous!) mithril dragons and brutal green dragons, skip right to the Barbarian Firemaking task. Return to TopGetting StartedTo begin this mini-quest, there is a list of three different skill combinations you can have. You must meet at least one of the following:
Remember, this is only to begin the mini-quest, not to complete all of it! Once you have one of the needed requirements, you are ready to begin your Barbarian Training! To start, you need to visit Otto Godblessed. His hut is near the top of Baxtorian Falls, on the west side. To get to Otto, you can head south from the Barbarian Outpost (the arena for Barbarian Assault). When you come across a lake that has a dock leading to the "Whirlpool", take the western path around the side of the lake. Here, you will find Otto's Grotto. ![]() (Side Note: When you are only beginning barbarian training, if you jump into the "Whirlpool", you will just be washed down Baxtorian Falls and take around 100 life points of damage. Nothing else interesting will happen - yet.) Speak with Otto and he will give you a book - "Barbarian Skills" - which you can read to see everything he has said to you so far about your tasks. Read it to check what you need to do. You can choose which tasks you would like to do, first - it's all your decision! Return to TopTasksThere are five tasks you must perform in order to complete your Barbarian Training. The following five sub-sections in the guide explain each of them:
Again, if your only goal is to reach the exciting, rewarding (and dangerous!) mithril dragons and brutal green dragons, skip right to the Barbarian Firemaking task. This section of this minigame has been rated as Low Risk. Refer to the top of our minigames page for a definition of High and Low Risk. Required Items: Bait (1+) or Feathers (1+) Begin this task by speaking with Otto. Ask him about Barbarian Fishing using a rod. He will tell you that Barbarians use a special rod and can catch special fish only found in the lake to the north-east. To get the Barbarian rod, search Otto's bed.
Next, with your bait (fishing bait or a feather will work), go out of Otto's hut and north a little bit. You should see a fishing spot. Select the option to start fishing. Look at the table below to see which fish you can catch based on your fishing level. Once you have caught a fish, you will get a message in your chatbox telling you to go back and speak to Otto. With that said and done, you have completed the Barbarian Pole Fishing task!
The Leaping trout and salmon are no different then their fly fishing counterparts, except that leaping fish cannot be cooked. But if you use a knife with a leaping fish, you will obtain 15 cooking experience, and may get one or both of the following: fish offcuts or roe. In addition to these, cutting a leaping sturgeon may yield caviar (not roe.) Sometimes cutting up the fish will give you nothing.
Fish offcuts can be used as bait, and conveniently stack. Roe and caviar can be used as bait, or can be eaten ... but their best use is in herblore. This is explained in the Barbarian Potion-Making section of this guide. Return to TopThis section of this minigame has been rated as Low Risk. Refer to the top of our minigame page for a definition of High and Low Risk. Required Items: None (Free Inventory Space and NOT a Harpoon) To begin this task, speak with Otto about bare-handed fishing. He will tell you that you need to go to a normal harpoon fishing spot. Do not bring a Harpoon unless you plan on dropping it. To find harpooning spots, refer to our Fishing Guide. When you catch a fish by hand, you have "Harnessed the Barbarian way of bare-handed fishing." The fishing requirements are twenty levels higher than those needed for normal harpooning. The table below shows the specific requirements.
Return to TopThis section of this minigame has been rated as Low Risk. Refer to the top of our minigame page for a definition of High and Low Risk. Required Items: Bow (not composite or ogre) and either Oak logs or a Hatchet To begin this task, speak with Otto about "Barbarian Firemaking". Otto will tell you that Barbarians use a bow instead of a tinderbox to light fire. Otto will ask you to set fire upon some "Oaken" logs (Oak logs) using the Barbarian way. In order to do this, you just need any type of bow (that's not composite or ogre) and a stack of Oak logs. Simply use the bow on the Oak logs in your inventory and you have completed this task. After you complete the task, you can use this technique anywhere in RuneScape, provided that you have the required Firemaking level. The requirements are twenty levels higher than those needed for normal firemaking. NOTE: The only differences between burning the logs with a tinderbox and with a bow is the required level. Gained experience remains the same. The table below shows the required Firemaking level to ignite specific types of logs using a bow.
After you have completed the Barbarian firemaking task, you have access to the extremely risky Ancient Cavern via the whirlpool. Return to TopBarbarian Potion-MakingThis section of this minigame has been rated as Low Risk. Refer to the top of our minigame page for a definition of High and Low Risk. Required Items: One Roe or One Caviar, and One Attack Potion(2) To begin this task, just as any other, you need to speak with Otto. Otto will tell you that the Barbarian way of potion-making is, indeed, different than the normal way. Otto will tell you that he wants you to bring him an Attack potion mix. If you do not already have an Attack potion(2) (from drinking off excess doses), you can use a 4-dose potion on an empty vial. The potion will decant into both vials, creating two 2-dose potions! (This works with any 4-dose potion.) Get a Roe or Caviar from Barbarian Pole Fishing and use it on an Attack potion(2). Give it to Otto and you have completed this task! After this, you can add Caviar (or Roe in some cases) to any 2-dose potion to make it a "Fishy mix". This adds a healing boost to each dose. For more detailed information, check out our Herblore Guide (Fish Potions). Return to TopBarbarian SmithingThis section of this minigame has been rated as Low Risk. Refer to the top of our minigame page for a definition of High and Low Risk. Required Items: Hammer, 2 Specific Bars, and 2 Specific Logs (Read before acquiring.) To begin this task, speak with Otto. He will explain to you the art of Barbarian smithing. You must first prove to Otto that you can make a spear, then he will allow you to make a hasta (Barbarian one-handed spear). Spears and hastas of each metal type are made at the same smithing levels as scimitars. So, grab two metal bars that that you are eligible to use (make any spear at or below your smithing level, referring to the table below). Also get two of the log type that goes along with the bars you have chosen (again refer to the table.)
Spears and hastas can only be made at a special Barbarian anvil. There is one just south of Otto's hut, and one in the Pottery in the Barbarian Village (west of Varrock). After you have made the spear, speak to Otto. Otto will then ask you to make a hasta. To do this, use the same procedure as you did to make the spear, but choose to make a hasta. Upon completion of this task, you can freely make the one-handed spears! Return to TopAncient CavernThis section of this minigame has been rated as Extremely High Risk. Refer to the top of our minigame page for a definition of High and Low Risk. After you have completed the Barbarian firemaking task, you have access to the Ancient Cavern. This area can only be entered by jumping into the whirlpool you passed on your way to Otto. Speak with him about what comes after Barbarian firemaking and he will explain to you the process of creating a memorial for late Barbarian ancestors. The Ancient Cavern can only be entered by jumping into the whirlpool you passed on your way to Otto. Again, it must be emphasized that this area is extremely high risk, with very high level monsters. Be sure to prepare carefully, wield an anti-dragon shield, and don't bring anything you aren't willing to lose. However, if you are skilled and lucky, a Mithril dragon may drop an extremely rare dragon full helm or draconic visage to brighten your day!
To complete the pyre ship task, you need to obtain Chewed bones, which are a rare drop obtained from killing Mithril dragons within the Ancient Cavern. After you have them, refer to our Firemaking Guide (Pyre Ships) to see how to release the dead barbarian spirit. You will receive a reward, which might include a dragon full helm! Be wary of using mangled bones, as they will release hostile level 166 spirits who would much rather kill you than journey to their final rest.
