Introduction

Gods are an incredibly important part of Runescape, waging wars against each other in the past that has shaped Gielinor into the world it is today. After the God wars in the Third Age the God of Balance, Guthix, created a series of decrees known as the Edicts of Guthix that saw a large number of the Gods banished from Gielinor, unable to return for as long as the edicts remained in place. At the end of the Fifth Age and during the World Wakes quest loyal servants of Armadyl, Bandos, Guthix, Saradomin, Zamorak and Zaros descended upon Guthix's resting place with their own ideas on how to get Guthix to revoke his edicts. Whilst the servants were arguing a Mahjarrat known as Sliske took it upon himself to kill Guthix with the Staff of Armadyl. As a result, one by one Gods began to return to Gielinor with devastating consequences.

This guide serves as an overview of the Gods of Runescape, due to the sheer amount of backstory and lore many of the Gods have only the important information is included.

The Gods of Runescape are split into tiers based on their power and skills, however just because a god is in a higher tier it does not mean they cannot be beaten by a lower tiered god. The tiers are as follows:

God Tiers

Elder Gods Bik, Ful, Jas, Mah, Wem
Transcendent Gods Seren and Zaros
High Gods Saradomin
Experienced Gods Armadyl and Tuska
Inexperienced Gods Brassica Prime, Elidnis, Marimbo, Tumeken and Zamorak

The Elder Gods

The Elder Gods are the original Gods and the ones who are responsible for creating Gielinor and the Elder Artifacts. The Elder Gods are far more powerful than any of the other gods and are unable to be killed. Very little is known about them currently and what is known was learned mostly through the TokHaar who are a race and Elder Artefact created by the Elder Gods to help create the landscape of Gielinor. All five of the Elder Gods are female, however currently only three are known.

About
Jas is thought to be the most powerful of the Elder Gods and is the creator of the Stone of Jas, one of the twelve Elder Artefacts. In order to protect the Stone against people who might wish to use its power themselves she created the Dragonkin whom she bound to it as a defence mechanism. If someone draws upon the power of the Stone the dragonkin become enraged and seek out and aim to destroy the so called "false user".

About
Mah is the youngest of the Elder Gods and also the only one not residing on Gielinor. When Mah was born the other Elder Gods thought her to be still-born and left her on Freneskae. Mah eventually awoke and managed to crawl out of the volcano she had been left in. The lack of Anima Mudai on Freneskae means Mah is not as strong mentally or physically as the other Elder Gods She used her powers to create Zaros and Seren as her dolls. Mah was reluctant to share information with Zaros and he began to resent her, eventually abandoning her and Freneskae to begin a quest for knowledge. Seren on the other hand remained and looked after her mother, believing her to be dying (Elder Gods cannot die, she was merely entering a sleep). During her time on Freneskae Mah created a number of races including the Mahjarrat and the Muspah. It is possible the Mahjarrat were created as failed replacements for Zaros after he abandoned her, however due to her depleted state she was unable to recreate something as powerful as her original children.

At the beginning of the Sixth Age, the World Guardian visited Freneskae and helped Zaros return to a corporeal form. This process caused Mah to wake from her slumber, forcing Zaros and the World Guardian to flee the realm.

Transcendent Gods

Transcendent Gods are the most powerful "new" Gods in Runescape, they have the ability to manipulate life and the life force of a world. As seen with both Zaros and Seren, they are also able to separate themselves from their body in order to survive.

About
Seren and her counterpart, Zaros, were created by the child-like Elder God Mah on Freneskae. Seren is very empathetic and emotive and unlike Zaros she felt a duty of care towards her creator. After Zaros' departure Mah began to have violent nightmares, often crying out for him and Seren was left to attempt to console her although she had little success. Mah's creation of the Mahjarrat left her weakened so Seren tricked them into performing sacrificial rituals to Mah in order to help her regain her strength. Before leaving Freneskae Seren, posing as Mah, taught the Mahjarrat a ritual that would help to protect them from the violent outbursts of the Elder Goddess.

After leaving Freneskae, Seren found the elven homeworld where she settled and was worshipped by the elves. Sometime later, Guthix came across Seren and invited her and her elves to join him on Gielinor. She became very close to Guthix, helping him to protect the mortals they brought to the world. She remained hidden on Gielinor during the 2nd and 3rd Ages whilst Guthix slept, despite him asking her to leave. After the God Wars, when Guthix banished a number of gods from he told Seren she must leave however she instead opted to explode herself into small crystals as she could not bare to be apart from her followers.

Seren's current location is unknown although it is believed that she is still connected to Prifddinas in some way.

About
Zaros and his counterpart, Seren, were created by the child-like Elder God Mah on Freneskae. Zaros is a being of incredible intellect and a desire for knowledge, knowledge which his creator would not provide him. Zaros became resentful towards Mah and her refusal to share knowledge with him and he decided to leave. Zaros travelled the universe, visiting a number of worlds on his quest for knowledge before finally arriving on Gielinor in the Second Age. Upon arriving in Gielinor he assembled a powerful army which included Dragon Riders and Mahjarrat (also created by Mah) and he begun his conquest from the desert lands and swept through Misthalin, Asgarnia and Forinthry (now the Wilderness). He made Senntisten the capital city of his vast empire which is now located underneath the digsite, east of Varrock.

Zaros' reign did not last. A group of his followers, lead by the Mahjarrat Zamorak sought to remove Zaros from power. Zamorak and his fellow mutineers stormed Zaros' throne room and whilst his allies distracted Zaros' generals, Zamorak engaged Zaros with the Staff of Armadyl. The exact details of what happened between Zamorak and Zaros are not certain, however the most common belief is that Zamorak managed to impale Zaros in the back with the staff however it did not kill him. Zaros was moments from killing Zamorak when he stumbled and fell backwards, impaling both him and Zamorak with the staff. The staff began to transfer Zaros' power to Zamorak so in order to save himself he separated from his body and vanished.

Despite his prolonged absence from Gielinor Zaros maintained a number of loyal followers, most notably Azzanadra and Nex. At the start of the Sixth Age the World Gate was found in the Shadow Realm making it possible to access Freneskae once more. With the help of Sliske, Azzanadra and the World Guardian restored the World Gate to the physical world and, with the help of the World Guardian, Zaros was able to obtain a corporeal form and return to Gielinor.

After returning to Gielinor Zaros plans to wake the Elder Gods from their sleep and attempt to persuade them not to destroy the universe they have created. Zaros also hopes to claim what he believes to be his birthright: Elder God status although given he was created by Mah whom the other Elder Gods believe to be dead it is unlikely they will agree. Zaros believes that humans cannot survive on their own and wishes to create a "New World Order" in which he guides them from behind the scenes.

About
Saradomin is one of the most followed Gods in Gielinor and is particularly popular amongst Humans. Despite him apparently being the God of Peace he has found himself at the forefront of a number of major conflicts in his time on Gielinor. He is also one of the few Gods in possession of an Elder Artefact: The Crown Archival.

Saradomin was responsible for the destruction of the Naragi city of Askroth. He arrived in the city not long after becoming a God and believed that because he was in possession of the Crown Archival the Naragi should worship him. They refused and Saradomin destroyed the city, replacing it with a fortress from where he sent out his armies. Saradomin felt guilty about what he had done to the Naragi and when other Gods began to arrive on the Naragi plane he fought hard to protect the Naragi from them until he was forced to leave after being defeated by the Goddess Tuska.

Like Zaros and Zamorak, Saradomin's arrival on Gielinor brought conflict as he began to seize land to establish a foothold on this world. After banishing Zamorak for killing Zaros and failing to get his hands on the Staff of Armadyl, Saradomin took the Stone of Jas. During the Gielinor God Wars, Saradomin was one of the most active participants as he attempted to claim land from Zaros' followers and and fend off the now returned Zamorak and his followers. On occasion, Zamorakian and Saradominist followers joined forces againt Zaros' however Saradomin eventually lost the City of Hallowvale to Zamorak. In an attempt to end the war and dispose of Zamorak, Saradomin, Armadyl and Bandos joined forces to create a powerful Godsword. After the Godsword was intercepted by Zamorakian forces, conflict broke out between Zamorak's forces and those of Armadyl, Bandos and Saradomin. As with the rest of the major Gods, Saradomin was banished from Gielinor by Guthix at the end of the God Wars.

With the death of Guthix at the end of the 5th Age, Saradomin was the first God to arrive back in Gielinor where he lay in wait for the return of Zamorak so he could once again try to destroy him. When Zamorak did return, Saradomin immediately engaged him in conflict in what is known as the Battle of Lumbridge. Eventually Saradomin was victorious and ascended to High God status. During the Death of Chivalry Saradomin manages to obtain the wand of resurrection either by force or by an adventurer giving it to him willingly. Saradomin uses the wand to resurrect Sir Owen, however Sir Owen's body becomes corrupted due to Saradomin not being worthy of the wand. Saradomin then either gives the wand to Sir Owen (if the God was given it willingly) or holds onto it, promising to give it to Sir Owen next time they meet if he is pure enough (if the God takes it by force). After these events Saradomin is unheard of until Sliske summons him to his Ascension, when Saradomin learns of Sliske's true motives to hold a contest for the Stone of Jas he is appaulled and warns Sliske not to play with the Stone.

About
Armadyl is widely regarded as the God of law and justice as well as the God of the skies. He is responsible for the Clan Citadels and he resides in the Empyrean Citadel now he has returned to Gielinor. As the name suggests he has held possession of the Staff of Armadyl, an Elder Artifact. Despite the staff being used to defeat two Gods (Zaros and Guthix), Armadyl has not used it himself to defeat another. According to Armadyl, he obtained godhood via the Staff of Armadyl and another artefact he will not disclose which suggests he may still have it in his possession.

Armadyl and Saradomin have many similar beliefs although Saradomin has pointed out that they do have minor differences. Despite this, it is believed the pair of them joined forces during the God Wars on several occasions and Armadyl seems to be one of the few Gods that Saradomin respects. Like the other major Gods, Armadyl was banished by the Edicts and spent his time wandering alone mourning the loss of the Aviantese as he believed them to have been wiped out by the God Wars.

In the Sixth Age, Armadyl returned to Gielinor after discovering that Sliske had taken over the Empyrean Citadel (likely done in order to ensure Armadyl attended his ascension). Armadyl attempted to stop Sliske's ascension, however the other Gods were forced to step down after Sliske threatened to kill Death. Not long after this, Bandos constructed a weapon near the Goblin Village designed to kill Armadyl. Armadyl retaliated by building his own weapon north of Port Sarim. Armadyl managed to power his weapon before Bandos and kill him, interestingly Armadyl took Bandos' mace as a trophy of his victory.

About
Very little is known about Tuska and her origins. Her ascension to Godhood came about when she managed to kill an unknown God. Even as a God she rampages around the world causing mass destruction wherever she goes and has even engaged Guthix, Saradomin and Skargaroth in battle.

During the Naragi God Wars she fought with Saradomin and managed to drive him from the Naragi homeworld. Not long after this Skargaroth began hunting her due to her strength, when he caught up with her he managed to blind her in one eye but failed to kill her. After being blinded she wounded Skargaroth who then came crashing down and inadvertently killed Guthix's sister, consequently Guthix took up arms against her and manage to blind her in her other eye using the Elder sword.

Following the death of Guthix at the end of the Fifth Age a group of Airut (followers of Tuska) arrived on Gielinor and it is widely believed that she will be arriving on Gielinor to wreak havoc soon.

About
Brassica Prime is a fairly easy going, possibly slightly insane deity and God of all cabbages on Gielinor. He believes himself to be the only true God and also powerful enough to not need an Elder Artefact. His first known appearance in Gielinor was during the 5th Age (whilst the Edicts of Guthix were still intact) when he revealed himself to players who kicked special cabbages from Falador to Oo'glog.

At the start of the 6th Age Saradomin inadvertently destroyed a number of cabbages at the Edgeville Monastery which greatly annoyed Brassica and as a result he now bears a grudge towards Saradomin. Brassica was invited to Sliske's ascension along with a number of other Gods, however during the event he remained silent. Brassica has opted to remain in the Empyrean Citadel as he is fond of the scenery and likes the cushion Slikse provided for him to sit on.

Elidinis is the goddess of fertility and growth. She is the wife of the god Tukemen and mother of Amascut and Icthlarin.

During the God Wars, a woman named Nardarine fled into the desert to escape the fighting in the North. Unprepared for the harsh desert conditions and dying from the heat, she prayed unsuccessfully to Saradomin to save her. Elidinis answered Nardarine's prayers and asked Nardarine to worship her in return. Nardarine agreed, so Elidinis created the River Elid to save her. Nardarine created the town of Nardah in her honour, and settlers in Nardah also worship her.

About
Tumeken is a founding member of the Desert Pantheon. In his Dream he created the desert and most of the Lesser Gods, including Icthlarin, Amascut, Het, Apmeken, Crondis, and Scabaras. He is revered as the Lord of Light and the God of the Sun.

Tumeken, after creating the desert, encountered Elidinis. He took her as a companion, and their offspring were Icthlarin and Amascut (The Devourer). Most of what we know about Tumeken is told in Tumeken's Dream, a story passed down in the desert and translated by Reldo. It tells of his creation of the desert, meeting Elidinis, and his creation of the four lesser desert gods during a dream. He seems to be very powerful, as he appears to have retained his powers even after creating multiple gods. His story seems similar to Guthix, as he did not create Gielinor, but rather came upon a land brimming with potential which he then shaped as he would.

About
Zamorak, a former general in Zaros' army is the God of Chaos and achieved Godhood through stabbing Zaros with the Staff of Armadyl and absorbing a considerable amount of his power. Prior to ascending to Godhood, Zamorak was the most powerful known Mahjarrat, even surpassing Azzanadra. He is bitter rivals with Saradomin. Unlike Bandos, Zamorak does not believe in mindless violence and destruction and will only fight if it is required for him to achieve his goal. At some point after defeating Zaros, Zamorak managed to obtain the Stone of Jas, it is not known how this happened or why he did.

After witnessing what Zamorak had done to Zaros, the remaining Gods on Gielinor united to banish him from the realm and Saradomin confiscated the Stone of Jas from him. Zamorak's banishment did not last and when he returned he was even more powerful and set out to regain the Stone of Jas which brought about the God Wars. During the God Wars, the other participating Gods (Saradomin, Armadyl and Bandos) decided to unite against Zamorak and forge a powerful weapon in order to stop him: the Godsword. Zamorak heard of their plan and whilst the sword was being transported by a group of Aviansie he had his forces intercept them. This began the battle that still continues today in the God Wars Dungeon. When Zamorak finally regained the Stone of Jas, he used it to reduce Forinthry to a wasteland after being cornered by the other Gods, hence the creation of the area known as the Wilderness. The devastation caused by Zamorak was enough to wake up Guthix who, angry at what the Gods had done to Gielinor, banished the Gods and created the Edicts of Guthix. Zamorak opted to hide at the bottom of Daemonheim.

Guthix's death at the end of the Fifth Age marked the end of the Edicts and allowed Gods to return to Gielinor. Zamorak was the second God to return, shortly after Saradomin and he immediately became involved in a conflict with Saradomin in Lumbridge. After a long stand off, Saradomin managed to overpower Zamorak and was preparing to kill him until Moia appeared and teleported her defeated God to safety. Zamorak's defeat cost him greatly, the power he lost was enough for him to drop from an 'Experienced God' to an 'Inexperienced God'. Zamorak was not heard of until Sliske's Ascendancy where Sliske claimed to be in possession of the Stone of Jas. Zamorak, still desiring the stone, swore that Sliske would not remain in possession of the Stone for long.

Demigods are the children of Gods and therefore have greater strength and magical ability than mortals. They are able to open small portals between worlds and manipulate mortals into doing their bidding against their will. Unlike full Gods, Demigods were not affected by the Edicts of Guthix and were therefore allowed to remain on Gielinor.

About
Amascut is goddess of destruction. She is sometimes known as the Devourer, as she devours the souls of the living and the dead. She is the daughter of the gods Tumeken and Elidinis.

Long ago Amascut's priestesses cast a curse upon her so that she would not be remembered, but her evil deeds would be. This ensured that she could have no willing followers. She retaliated by turning them all into cats, but they retained the powers she had bestowed upon them. Therefore, she has an intense fear of cats. This is also the reason why her tent, north of Sophanem, smells of dead cat.

At the end of the Fifth Age Amascut, disguised as a woman named Lady Keli, plotted to obtain the legendary Kharid-ib. In order to do this she kidnaps Prince Ali of Al-Kharid and, after the passing of the Emir, demands the Kharid-ib in exchange for the Prince's life. She ultimately ends up in possession of the Kharid-ib which is said to increase her power considerably.

In the Icthlarin's Little Helper quest she takes the body of a frail wanderer and hypnotises a hapless adventurer to help her steal the soul of the recently deceased High Priest of Sophanem, Klenter. Her plan fails when Icthlarin lifts the hypnosis from the adventurer, however she later manages to hypnotise another unsuspecting adventurer who manages to succeed. After this she unleashed a series of plagues upon Sophanem which results in Menaphos quarantining the city, even after the plague had been established to not be contagious. According to Lapalok, Amascut is currently in the process of making her grand ascent.

At some point Amascut became angry at the Goddess Apmeken for trying to bring peace to the desert and as a result she stripped her of her senses. In the Fifth Age, Apmeken has her senses restored by an adventurer and she goes off in pursuit of Amascut.

About
Icthlarin is the god of the dead and burial rituals. He ensures the dead arrive safely into the underworld and prevents tombs from desecration. He is the son of Tumeken and Elidinis and hence the brother of Amascut.

Icthlarin has the head of Jackal and the body of a human; the reason for this is unknown. He appears to be fond of cats, possibly because cats are the guardians of the underworld, or because his rival, Amascut, despises them.

Icthlarin was originally the leader of the Mahjarrat, however it appears that the Mahjarrat left his control when they realised Icthlarin had little influence. They chose to follow a god named Zaros since they believed he truly understood their ways.

Icthlarin returned to the world of the living at the start of the Sixth Age when Death was kidnapped by Sliske as Sliske knew that would be the only way to get Icthlarin to attend his ascension. At the end of the Ascension Sliske unleashed a Dragonkin upon Icthlarin and the adventurer however Icthlarin managed to stave off the Dragonkin long enough for Death to be freed. After these events, Icthlarin returned to his domain.

As a reward for loyalty, his followers have become more insect-like in physical features as well as mentally. During the Second Age, Scabaras followers were not regarded as 'evil', and were seen as philosophers and intellectuals. The Pharaoh Queen, Senliten, attributes this to lack of cooperation amongst factions of gods and their followers. Scabaras is said to have formed the Kalphites as well, by bleeding on scarabs. Today, Scabarites are banished from the Menaphites' society, supposedly because after the Edicts of Guthix Scabaras broke the laws by interfering in the world and even had his followers attempt to dig under the River Elid. For this, the Menaphites retaliated and even now look down upon the worship of Scabaras

Deceased Gods

Killing a God is no mean feat however there are three documented occasions of this happening. When a God is killed, their power generally transfers to the victor and they themselves become a God if they are not one already.

About
Bandos is often referred to as the "Big High War God" by his followers and his philosophy is fairly straightforward compared to some of the other Gods: war is inevitable and only the strongest should survive. Unlike many of the races who follow him, Bandos is incredibly intelligent and a masterful strategist and tactician. Very little is known about Bandos prior to his arrival on Gielinor during the Second Age, however he is known to have been born into a race of warriors which he became the chief of when he was young. Some time before arriving on Gielinor, Bandos discovered the realm of Yu'biusk which harboured peaceful races such as Goblins and Ogres to which he brought weaponry and war.

When Bandos travelled to Gielinor he unsurprisingly was involved in the God Wars where he caused chaos by forming temporary alliances with other Gods only to turn on them after victory, ensuring that no God gained too much power in the conflict. The end of the God Wars saw Bandos banished from Gielinor by the Edicts of Guthix. In his anger, Bandos returned to Yu'buisk and manipulated the races there into going to war with each other, eventually all like on Yu'buisk was wiped out. After this, still banished, Bandos attempted to reclaim some of his followers on Gielinor.

During the Goblin Quest series, set in the Fifth Age, an adventurer unknowingly becomes involved in Bandos' attempts to reclaim the Dorgeshuun goblin tribe. After failing to control Zanik Bandos managed to take over a Goblin High Priest and he engaged the adventurer, eventually being defeat. This defeat cost Bandos dearly, the power he lost caused him to fall from a 'High God' to 'Experienced God'.

After Guthix was slain at the end of the Fifth Age and the Edicts were broken, Bandos returned to Gielinor and attended Sliske's Ascension after learning his enemy, Armadyl, would be in attendance. Bandos enjoyed Slikse's idea of the Gods fighting to death and not long after the Ascension he built a weapon to the north of Falador in an attempt to destroy Armadyl. Armadyl stationed himself near the Clan Camp and built a similar weapon. Bandos' followers failed to power up their weapon before Armadyl and as a result Armadyl's weapon fired on Bandos, separating his head from his body. Bandos' head remains at the entrance of the Goblin Village, north of Falador as a shrine to his followers.

Prior to his death, Bandos was classed as an Experience God.

About
Guthix was the first God to arrive on Gielinor and was also the most powerful of the younger gods. Upon arriving on Gielinor and realising its beauty and perfection he decided to bring life to the planet. Originally Guthix belonged to a now extinct race (they were decimated in a God War involving Saradomin, Skargaraoth and Tuska) known as the Naragi, however after witnessing his daughter being crushed by a collapsing Skargaroth he picked up Skargaroth's sword and killed him. With Skargaroth slain, Guthix absorbed his power and became a god himself.

After bringing races he thought peaceful to Gielinor he invited another god, Seren, to join him. The pair of them worked together to protect the mortals they brought to the world, during this time the pair became very close to one another. During the Second Age, whilst Guthix slept further gods arrived on Gielinor which ultimately brought about the God Wars in the Third Age. Guthix woke from his slumber during the God Wars and was angered by what had taken place, particularly the destruction of Forinthry which is now known as the Wilderness. As a result Guthix issued a series of decrees known as the Edicts of Guthix which saw most of the gods banished from Gielinor. After this Guthix returned to his sleep, not to be awaked again until the 5th Age.

At the end of the 5th Age factions of some of the more prominent gods learned where Guthix was resting and descended upon the caves in an attempt to end the Edicts so their gods could return. Whilst the factions were bickering amongst themselves a Mahjarrat known as Sliske, armed with the Staff of Armadyl, killed Guthix. Guthix's death broke the Edicts and allowed gods to return once more to Gielinor.

Prior to his death, Guthix was classed as a Transcendent God.

About
Skargaroth was a powerful God who took pleasure in hunting powerful prey such as the Goddess Tuska. Skargaroth, in pursuit of Tuska, found himself on the Naragi homeworld. During his conflict with Tuska the vast majority of the Naragi were killed leaving on Guthix and his sister alive. When Skargaroth was wounded by Tuska he came crashing down on a house containing Guthix and his sister, the latter of whom was killed. In his anger and grief, Guthix took his Elder sword and stabbed Skargaroth, killing him. The remains of Skargaroth can still be seen on the Naragi homeworld.

Prior to his death, Skargaroth was considered an Experienced God.
