Woodcutting Guide
Introduction
Woodcutting is a skill used to chop logs from trees. These logs can be used for Firemaking, Fletching, or possibly Construction. Simply click on a tree to chop it down. However, you will need to have the necessary hatchet in your inventory or toolbelt and a minimum Woodcutting level. You can add a hatchet to your toolbelt. If you do not meet the woodcutting requirement of the hatchet, it will act as the highest level hatchet you can use.
 |
If you are just starting out in Woodcutting you may want to pay a visit to Roddeck the Advisor in the building just east of the Lumbridge General Store to learn about the different kinds of trees and hatchets. You can get a free Bronze hatchet from Bob’s Brilliant Axes and a free Tinderbox from the Lumbridge General Store. If you are a member, you might also pay a visit to Larry the Lumberjack or Moe the Miner just south-west of Varrock to obtain a handy tool - the Dwarven army axe. This can be used as a Tinderbox and a Hatchet. You can also use a Bronze hatchet or Tinderbox from your Toolbelt. |
Tools
Hatchets
Hatchets are the primary tool for woodcutting. The better your hatchet, the higher your chance of getting logs from the tree.

Trees and Bushes
There are several types of trees all over the RuneScape world, the grey rows in the table below indicate members only varieties.
Normal Tree |
1 |
Hatchet |
25 |
This is what everybody starts on. This gives the only type of logs that can be used to Fletch arrow shafts. Regular trees are also seen around the world in three other different varieties. 'Dead' Trees, 'Dying Trees,' and 'Evergreen' Trees. They give the same Exp as normal trees except some dead trees in the Wilderness give Charcoal instead of logs. |
Achey Tree |
1 |
Hatchet |
25 |
Part of the Big Chompy Bird Hunting Quest. Find more details in our Chompy Hunting guide. |
Light Jungle |
10 |
Machete |
32 |
Cut in Tai Bwo Wannai Clean-up area to earn favour for trading sticks. While cutting you will often be attacked by many enemies from the minigame. |
Oak Tree |
15 |
Hatchet |
37.5 |
The next step up from normal, these can be used to gain xp. A popular choice for making planks to train Construction. |
Medium Jungle |
20 |
Machete |
55 |
Cut in Tai Bwo Wannai Clean-up area to earn favour for trading sticks. While cutting you will often be attacked by many enemies from the minigame. |
Willow Tree |
30 |
Hatchet |
67.5 |
The most common tree apart from normal. Used by many players for firemaking and fletching as it is not too hard to obtain and there is a good market for their logs. |
Dense Jungle |
35 |
Machete |
80 |
Cut in Tai Bwo Wannai Clean-up area to earn favour for trading sticks. While cutting you will often be attacked by many enemies from the minigame. |
Teak Tree |
35 |
Hatchet |
85 |
Generally used to make planks for Construction. They can be found in
Occasionally while cutting teaks, you will get a special teak log. Bring this to the sawmill and sell it for 1.3k gp, or exchange 2 of them for a full inventory of teak planks. |
Maple Tree |
45 |
Hatchet |
100 |
Not a green tree! There are plenty of these around Seers' village, especially north towards the Fremennik Province. The only place these trees are currently available on F2P is in the Dungeoneering resource dungeon on Daemonheim peninsula. |
Hollow Tree |
45 |
Hatchet |
82.5/357.7* |
These are only found east of Canifis in the Haunted Woods. If you get bark from cutting this tree, you get 357.7 experience. The bark can not be used for fletching. Use the bark on a torch in the Haunted Woods (along with a tinderbox) to get good firemaking experience. Bark is also used to make Splitbark Armour for Magicians. |
Mahogany Tree |
50 |
Hatchet |
125 |
Generally used to make planks for Construction. They can be found in

A good tree to cut down if you want to make money, for fletching and the best available for f2p players. |
Choking Ivy |
68 |
Hatchet |
332.5 |
Earns fast experience points. Cutting it does not produce items in your inventory (such as logs.) However, a bird’s nest may still randomly fall while cutting. Ivy can be found growing on walls in the following cities:
- Varrock Palace, north side near yews and south-east near Tree farming patch
- Falador, outside north wall and outside south wall
- Taverley, south-east
- East Ardougne, outside east wall of church

- Resource Dungeon in Varrock Sewers
|
Elder Tree |
90 |
Hatchet |

- East of the Varrock lodestone
- South of the Yanille pet store, outside the wall
|
Crystal tree |

Hatchet |
434.5 |
A tree introduced late 2013. Similar to ivy, this tree produces no logs. It randomly produces crystal geodes. One earns about 100k XP and 5-10 geodes per hour. The chance of obtaining a geode can be increased with scrimshaws and such, with a superior scrimshaw generally netting you over an inventory's with every hour.
- South-west of Rellekka
- Directory north of farming site south of Falador
- North of the Flax field in seers
- Dark Wizards' Tower east of Falador
- North-west of the POH portal on Brimhaven
- South of the Wizards' guild in Yanille (outside the town)
- North-west of the Observatory
- South-east of the Gnomeball minigame in the Tree Gnome Stronghold
|
* The Tai Bwo Wannai Clean-up tree grove costs 100 trading sticks to enter. It contains 4 Mahogany and 9 Teak trees.
** Once you have completed the Royal Trouble quest, these trees are a kingdom resource. You cannot keep any logs you cut and the xp is negligible, but you can choose to collect them from your investment.
Some types can only be reached via a certain quest.
Cursed Willow Roots |
37 |
Hatchet |
15 |
Can only be cut in the Spirit plane after the Summer's End quest. To get to these after the quest, you will have to collapse the cave in the regular world with a pickaxe and then go to the Spirit plane and cut them. |
Cursed Magic Tree |
82 |
Hatchet |
275 |
Can only be cut in the Spirit plane after the Spirit of Summer quest |
The Cursed Trees/Roots can only be cut after either the Spirit of Summer quest or Summer's End quest.
Bird's Nests (members only)
While woodcutting, a bird's nest will occasionally drop out of the tree and land next to you. If you pick up the nest and search it, it might contain some useful or valuable items, such as rings and seeds for farming. Other possible loot includes raven eggs, and red, green or blue birds' eggs. These eggs can be incubated and raised as pets for those with higher levels of the Summoning skill. Once empty, the nest can be crushed using a pestle and mortar for use in the Herblore skill.
As well as normal woodcutting you can also obtain nests from Managing Miscellania and by killing the Giant Mole then trading its mole skins and claws with Wyson the Gardener. Nests obtained from Wyson can also contain normal seeds and herb seeds or be empty.
Jagex says that you can increase your odds of getting a bird's nest while Woodcutting by wearing a strung rabbit's foot which requires level 24 Hunter to wear and level
37 Crafting to make.
Canoes
Canoe's are one of the many different types of transport within RuneScape. As your woodcutting level increases you will be able to build better and better canoes to travel along the River Lum. This river travels all the way from Lumbridge to Level 35 Wilderness. There are four types of canoes, each one being progressively better than the previous one. Detailed information about travelling using the canoes can be found in the Canoe Section of the Getting Around Guide.
Shown below are the canoes and the level required to carve them as well as the experience given for cutting and carving them.

Woodcutting Stumps (members only)
Woodcutting stumps are located in Neitiznot on the Fremennik Isles. They are currently only used to craft and cut arctic pine logs.
* You must have reached a certain point in The Fremennik Isles quest to learn how to make round shields. For more stats, see our combat guide.
Jadinko Lair (members only)
The Jadinko Lair lies in the south-east corner of Karamja, to the east and across the waterfall from Shilo Village. Grab your hatchet and venture beneath the surface to find a lair filled with your target, jade roots. These roots hang from the ceiling, curling and uncurling randomly. The position the roots hang determine the kind of root you'll receive when you cut them. Both types of root will give you the same experience per cut, but will yield different types of roots with different uses. A third type of root, mutated, can also be cut. There are fewer of these roots available, but they give more experience per cut than the other two root types.
Straight roots |
83 |
161.6 |
Requires two cuts to fully sever the root, with each cut giving 80.8 experience. Four roots are received upon fully cutting. Used in the Fletching skill. |
Curly roots |
83 |
161.6 |
Requires two cuts to fully sever the root, with each cut giving 80.8 experience. Four roots are received upon fully cutting. Used in the Firemaking skill. |
Mutated Roots |
83 |
140 |
Does not require two cuts like the other vines, exp is per one cut. Cutting mutated roots will yield several Mutated Vines, which stack, unlike the other two root types. These vines can be attached to Sagaie Shafts to create Sagaie, or strung between Excrescences to make a pair of Bolas |

Sawmill Jobs (Members only)
 |
The Sawmill is connected to the south-east corner of the Lumberyard in Varrock, directly east of the Sawmill Operator's shed. |
Experienced Woodcutters can earn fast experience working at the Sawmill by completing various Sawmill Jobs. Level 80 Woodcutting and a saw are required. Free saws are available from a crate at the Sawmill. A crystal saw works faster, provides double experience for cutting planks, and no charges are consumed in the process.
Operating the sawmill is fairly straightforward, but for more specific information, see our detailed instructions. For every job you complete, you earn a bonus amount of Woodcutting experience (see "Sawmill Jobs Bonus EXP Table" below), on top of the experience you gain from cutting up the individual planks along the way:

- Note: You may ruin a plank (or half of a combination) at the workbench, because each type of cut has a difficulty assigned. If you ruin one of the planks, you will not get any experience, even if you successfully cut the other plank. Nothing can be done except make a new plank and try again.
Limitations
- You cannot enter the Sawmill by boosting to level 80 using regular/Mature Axeman's Folly.
- Logs, planks and cut planks cannot be removed from the area.
- Familiars are not allowed, not even in your pack.
- Everything in the cart is submitted when you finish a job - so you should withdraw your extras for the next job. While inspecting the cart, click to remove cut planks. You can also click cut planks in your inventory to store them in the cart.
- With the exception of Diagonal-cut planks, the cart can only store up to 63 of each type of plank. The cart can store up to 127 Diagonal-cut planks. If you have 63 of one type -- or 127 of Diagonal-cut planks -- stored, and continue to cut more of that type, they will begin to appear in your inventory instead.
- If you leave the area you will lose any logs, planks or cut planks in your inventory. If you log out while in the area, upon logging back in you will spawn outside of it, and all of the logs, planks, or cut planks in your inventory will have been removed.
Detailed Instructions
As you go east from the building out into the work area, you will see a Job Board on the building's outside wall. Choose a Quick or a Large job. Once you have selected a job, a small task list reminder showing your progress will appear in the upper left-hand corner of the game window.
To do your job, proceed clockwise around the area:
- Get logs from the stacks of logs.
- Place them in the Conveyor belt hopper (holds up to 63).
- Remove the planks (two per log) from the plank stack at the end of the conveyor belt.
- Go to a workbench and select the plank shapes you want to cut to meet your job list. A saw is required!
- Cut planks are automatically deposited into the cart.
Woodcutting Urns
Urns collect woodchips while you are woodcutting which can eventually be teleported away for free experience once it is filled. There are four different woodcutting urns. Each urn requires a different crafting level to make and will give a different amount of experience when you fill it up and teleport it away. Chopping higher level trees will fill the urn faster than lower level trees, but the experience for teleporting the urn away is the same regardless of what fills it up. Please view our Urns Section in the Crafting Guide for more detailed information on urns.
Before you can start filling an urn, you need to activate it with an earth rune. Adding the rune requires the same crafting level as making the urn. You can have up to ten non-empty urns in your bank at once. This includes partially filled urns, completely filled urns and anything in between. You can check the level of your urn by right-clicking the urn in your inventory and choosing the Check-level option. It will also give you a message once it is 1/4 full, 1/2 full, 3/4 full or completely full.
Note: Choking Ivy does not fill urns.

With high Fletching levels, players can use Ancient bones obtained from Player-owned ports to create useful scrimshaw items for Woodcutting. Each item requires 10 of these bones, rewarding 4000 fletching experience for each one made, and gives various bonuses when woodcutting.
Skillchompas
Skillchompas are skilling tools gained through Hunter which provide an explosive alternative to conventional skill training.
Wielded as a weapon, Skillchompas provide the regular resources one would expect from Woodcutting as well as acting as different levelled hatchets (see the levels section for more). On top of this, you will receive a 10% base xp increase for each successful action, and a little xp if unsuccessful.

Skill mastery and Beyond
Cape of Achievement
Once you have mastered the skill and reached level 99 you may want to buy a Woodcutting cape from Wilfred. If you already have another 99 skill, or obtain another one while wearing the cape (unless you have it keepsaked), it will become a Woodcutting cape (t).
Please refer to the Achievement Capes guide for more details.

After obtaining 99 Woodcutting it becomes possible to obtain a Wooden shard randomly, which can be combined with other shards from the other gathering skills (Divination, Farming, Fishing, Hunter, Mining) to create a Gatherer's cape and Gatherer's hood. The cape has the same stats as a trimmed skill cape and the helm is purely cosmetic.
True Woodcutting Mastery
Achieving 99 is the ultimate goal for many players, however the skill does not stop there. For players wanting to show off their dedication to a skill it is possible to obtain "True Mastery" by obtaining "120 Woodcutting" which is 104,273,167 XP. The Woodcutting master cape can then be purchased from Wilfred.
It is worth noting that beyond level 99 there is no additional content for woodcutting as the level increases are invisible so training the skill gets no faster. To work out your theoretical woodcutting level check out our XP table.
