1. Start

To start, speak with the house maid Maria outside of the Mansion, north-east of Varrock (south of the Rag and Bone Man). Offer her your help, and she'll ask you to enter the mansion and investigate the deaths happening inside.

Note: 'Broken Home' is a quest which does not allow any items to be taken inside. You can deposit all your items at the item deposit point next to Maria before entering.

2. Ground Floor

Enter the mansion, and you'll see a ghostly waif appear and walk through a wall. When inside the mansion, you will be subject to attack from the ghost of Ormod when passing between doors. He will only appear behind doors that have a smoky effect around them. You can avoid him by right clicking the door and 'peeking' first before entering the room, or entering the room and quickly exiting then re-entering. You can do this with any door in the Mansion.

Follow the waif and enter the first save room (a). Whenever you re-enter this room, all of your progress is saved. This includes items collected, doors unlocked and chests opened. Run west to the chest against the wall and open it for a slab of mystery meat. Mystery Meat will fully heal you if you find yourself attacked by Ormod, or lose health for any other reason. It's a good idea to conserve it until you're very low on health.

Head north through the door into the next corridor, and then head through the door on the west wall to room (b). You'll briefly see a House Maid before she is consumed by a monstrous hand appearing from the portrait. She'll drop a raven key and some clock hands. Return to the save room via the same path, and put the clock hands on the Grandfather clock next to the chest to receive an eye gem.

Now head back to the main hall either from the save room or the corridor north, and cross the main hall to the door in the north-east corner on the Eastern wall (c). Open this door with the Raven Key, and you'll see another Ghostly Waif pass through a wall. Take the door on the south wall and enter the study. Search the desk in this room to find Ingram's notes on the ghost attacks, and then head west to the library in room (d). Investigate the stack of fallen books to start the book stacking puzzle.

Broken Home Guide Book Puzzle

This puzzle is randomly generated for all players, and the aim is to restack the books in the right order. Start with any combination, and check your solution. If the first book is wrong (the one that's on the bottom of the stack), simply replace it with another and repeat until you get that book right. Keep going with the second, third etc book until you complete the puzzle, and receive another two eye gems for your efforts. Now follow the path back out to the corridor through the study, and head through the easternmost door into another corridor, and then the northernmost door. Get into the armoury (e) by taking the first door to the west of you, and complete the armour puzzle using the following solution to get the next eye gem.

  • On entering the room, push the statue to the west.
  • Run south until you cannot go any further. Push the statue to the east.
  • Step where this statue was, and take one step south. Push the statue to the west.
  • Take two steps south and push the statue to the east against the wall
  • There is a final line of four statues in front of the eye gem. Push the westmost statue south into the corner, and then push the statue two east of this south against the wall. Finally, push the statue directly in front of the eye gem to the west.

After taking the gem, go out of the room and go up the stairs to the west.

3. First Floor

Enter the door to the east when you come up the stairs. An emaciated spirit and a ghostly waif will walk through the door at the end of the corridor. At the end of the corridor there is a door to the east, enter it and read Ingram's research notes. After reading the research notes you will receive a spider key and a scroll fragment.

Backtrack to the corridor you arrived at when you came up the stairs and go through the door to the south. Run to the west and open the door with the spider key.

Enter the room to the south and search the dead servant on the bed to find another eye gem. Next enter the room to the west and pull back the curtains to find a faceless servant. Search her to receive the statue key. Go back out the corridor and open the door to the north-west. Try speak to the emaciated spirit, but he will disappear. Open the door with the statue key to the south (the first door in that corridor).

In the room with the statue, you will need to add two of the eye gems to it to open the door to the east and pick up the eye gem on the floor beside the statue. Enter the room to the west and there is another statue, add two more eye gems to it and the door to the south will unlock. Enter the room to the south and there will be another statue, add two more eye gems to it and the door to the east will unlock. Enter the room to the east and pick up the scythe key.

Backtrack out to the main hall and open the locked door on the east side of the stairs. Enter the door to the south-east. This room is a safe-room and your progress will be saved. There is a chest here that contains some mystery meat. Investigate the shrine to find a grand piano key and the skull key. Go back out to the corridor and you'll hear a scream. Try open the door to the west and it is blocked by a servants body. Open the door to the north-east. Next open the door to the north-west. Go to the end of the corridor and open the door. Head down the stairs.

4. Ground Floor

Now on the ground floor, prepare to take damage in the next corridor. In the next corridor the windows will break and the light will start to damage you. This light damage will recur in certain rooms from this point forward. When you are ready, go through the last door at the end of the corridor. Once the windows have broken, quickly run south and go through the door at the south-west. This corridor is safe, however be prepared to take damage in the next room as you run through the main hall. Once you are ready, enter the door at the end of the corridor, run toward the west wall and go through the southern door into the safe room. If you have enough lifepoints, you may wish to go upstairs from the main hall and move the servant's body away from the door on the east side for later. Keep in mind, you will continue to take light damage on the first floor. If you don't do this now, you will have a chance to do it later.

From the safe room, use the door to the north-west to enter the corridor. Next open the door to the north-east with the Skull key. Next open the first door on east and read more of Ormod's notes. After reading the notes you will find another scroll fragment. Exit the room and enter room to the north-east and try talk to the ghostly waif. However, she will not talk back, copy the movements she makes and she will start to smile. Exit the room to go back to the corridor and enter the door to the north.

Once into the next corridor, open the door to the west to enter a room with a grand piano. Use the piano fragment on the piano and play it to unlock a secret door on the south wall of the room. The light in the following room will damage you, so move quickly. Enter the room to the south and search the scorched skeleton in the south-east of the room. You will receive an eye gem. Go back through the piano room and back into the corridor. Enter the room at the end of the corridor and go down the stairs to enter the basement.

5. The Basement

Enter the door to the north-west and search the dead butler to receive the cleaver key. Exit that room and enter the room to the north, this is the armoury and a safe room. Open the chest to find more mystery meat. Exit the safe room and enter the room to the north-east.

In this room you need to get to the other side of the room. Turn off run for this room, or you will take damage. You will need to time your movements so as not to get hit by the flying knives. Enter the room at the other side of this room and open the middle door on the north wall. Search the chest of drawers on the west wall of this room to receive a large pipette. Exit this room and enter the door to the north-east (the third door on the north wall). In this room search the pig and use the large pipette on the pick to receive a large pipette of pig bile. Exit this room and enter the room on the east side.

After entering the room with the furnace, search it to receive some human ashes. Exit the furnace room and go to the cauldron in the south-west corner of the kitchen and add the ashes and pipette to the cauldron. Next use the large pipette on the cauldron to fill it and get alkaline concoction. Then use the alkaline concoction on the door to the south of the cauldron to dissolve the ectoplasm blocking the door. Go through that door

Once you are through the door and into the corridor someone will lock the door behind you. Enter the first door to the west and investigate the frozen servant and take the doll key from her mouth. Leave the room and enter the room across the corridor from the room you left.

There is a snake key on a hook on the wall just north of the ladder in the room. Go up the ladder and the snake key will be used to unlock the hatch. You will be on the ground floor, but the light that damages you is still there. Run up the stairs and enter the door to the west. Go to the end of this corridor and open the door with the doll key. Go up the spiral stair case and pick up the tusks key in front of you. Speak to the emaciated spirit, but he will not notice you and will speak about losing a hair brush.

Exit the room and descend the stair case and enter the corridor. Go through the door to the north and then go through the next door at the end of the corridor. At the end of this corridor use the tusks key to open the door. Investigate the bust to open a trap door to the south-east. Go through the trapdoor and search the thief to find an eye gem.

Go back up the ladder and back into the corridor. Enter the other door on the wall you exit. Go through the rooms with the statues to the last room and add the two eye gems to the statue. A secret door in the north-east of the room will open. Enter it and take the mother's hairbrush from the shrine. Next go back to the room where the emaciated spirit is.

6. Lenian and the ghostly waif

Give the hair brush to the emaciated spirit and it will turn into Lenian. He will begin to explain about the mansion when the ghostly waif will appear and eat him. You will be thrown down the stairs (breaking them in the process). You will find the noose key.

Enter the door to go into the corridor and run the door at the end of the corridor and then run to the door where the servant was blocking the door (assuming you moved him earlier, if not move him now). Run to the end of the corridor and enter the door, run to the end of the corridor and open the door to the south with the noose key. If you aren't fast enough and the monster kills you, you will spawn again at the bottom of the stairs you were thrown down.

In this room there is a cupboard in the south-east corner, open it and climb down the ladder into the basement. Follow the corridor, about three quarters of the way there is a peephole, look through it to memorise the symbols on the wall. After your character memorises the symbols enter the door at the end of the corridor. Go to the door at the end of this corridor. In the next room descend the stairs in the south-east to enter the sub-basement. At the bottom of the stairs enter the door to the south-east (it will be unlocked with the symbols your character memorised earlier) and descend the stairs in this room.

In this room there are 4 statues, move the second, third, and fourth statue onto the pressure plate to open the ancient door and descend the stairs. Run north and descend the stairs and then run south and descend more stairs. This time you will enter a cavern with some mountaineering gear tied to a pillar in the north-west. Use the mountaineering gear to descend into the pit.

7. The Asylum

After climbing down into the pit there is a chest in the north with some mystery meat. Next go east through the door and search the reception desk to receive a chains key and nabor's notes on insanity. Go through the door to the north and run to the end of the corridor and open that door to enter another corridor. At the end of this corridor use the chains key to unlock the door at the end of the corridor and go through it. Run south to the end and open the door on the east. Run east and enter the door. Go south into the prison cell and pick up the dagger key. There is nothing more to do here so backtrack to the entrance of the asylum.

Climb back up the rope and navigate your way back up to the main room of the basement leading to the ground floor. There is a safe room on the west side of the north wall if you want to save. Go up the stairs to the ground floor of the mansion to a room with two doors and stairs. The monster will follow you after you leave this room! Quickly take the south-west door, followed by the south door, followed by the south-west door. This will take you to the safe room adjacent to the main entrance of the ground floor.

Make sure you have adequate health to face the damaging light in the next room. When you are ready, take the east door to the main entrance of the ground floor, quickly run upstairs and enter the door to the east. You will need to move the servant's body if you have not already done so. Quickly use the dagger key to unlock and open the door immediately to the south. You are safe from the monster in this room.

In this room read Ingram's rantings to receive the third and final scroll fragment. Combine the three fragments and Nabor's notes on insanity to receive break curse scroll. Leave the room you are in and go back to the corridor with the monster. Run to the opposite end of the corridor, turn around and use the break curse scroll on the monster when it appears. Talk to it.

After talking to the monster it will ask how you would like to deal with Ormod (either have the monster eat Ormod or take the form of Lenian and let Ormod move on and rest in peace). Choose whichever option you want as it will make no difference to the end results. Go to the ground floor of the mansion, where the monster will now protect you from the light damage. Speak to "Lenian" and your choice of what happens to Ormod will happen. Once that is done go outside the mansion and speak to Maria to finish the quest.

Tips, Tricks & Notes

  • Post-quest, you can talk with Maria outside the mansion to receive a set of 3 challenges to complete: "Complete a replay without dying," "Complete a replay without dying using one or less piece of food," and "Complete a replay in under 37 minutes." This gives a reward of a huge prismatic lamp, Rowena pet, and asylum surgeon's ring, respectively.
  • The asylum surgeon's ring is an upgrade to the asylum doctor's ring, as it is a tier 85 ring.
  • The quest can be repeated weekly at the usual reset time (Wednesday 00:00 UTC) to obtain a reward of a large prismatic lamp. If all three challenges have been completed, you will instead receive a huge prismatic lamp.
