Farming Guide

Introduction

To start Farming (Members Only skill) you will need to find a Farming patch. There are different types of patches around the world where you can grow different things. Their locations and details are explained later in this guide. When you arrive at a patch for the first time it will be overgrown with weeds. You will need to clear these weeds with a rake. You'll then want to treat the soil with compost (bought from the farmer, a farming shop, or you can make your own). In most cases, you'll then use a seed on the farming patch, while having a seed dibber in your inventory, to plant it. Use a watering can on the new plant so it will start growing (not needed if you pay a nearby farmer to take care of your plants). Take care to note that your plants can get diseased and die if left alone.

Newp2p Farming Guide

If your plant gets diseased you will have to use a plant cure potion on the plant (Flowers can also protect your crops). This can be bought from any farmer that lingers close to most farming patches for 25 coins. You can tell those farmers apart from the attackable ones by their unique names. You can also buy these Plant Cure Potions at Farming Shops, but for 40 coins. If you don't use the Plant Cure Potion on your plant in time it will die and you'll have to clear out your patch with a spade in your inventory. Note that Lunar Magick offers a level 66 spell to cure disease and a level 83 spell to treat a patch with supercompost.

When you are harvesting some patches you will need a spade as well. You can treat patches with compost to avoid disease and increase harvest yield when you pick the grown plant. The below equipment is suggested; note that you can put several of these on your Toolbelt to avoid the need to bring them along.

The locations of each type of patch, a minimap, what you can plant, how long they will take and how much XP you receive are shown below. Take full advantage of alternative traveling methods described in the Getting Around guide. This RuneScape farming map might also be useful.

Farming tools, shops and storage

Before you can start Farming you will need to get some farming tools. These can all be bought in the Farming Shops located close to all allotment patches. They are relatively inexpensive at around a few gp each. Some of them can also be found at various respawning points, such as the shed in Lumbridge swamps. Here is a list of all the farming tools:

Pic Name Information
rake Rake Needed to clear weeds from patches.
spade Spade Needed to harvest crops, to remove dead plants, to remove plant roots and bushes, to plant tree seedlings and to pick herbs.
watering can Watering can Needed to start allotment, flowers, and potted tree seeds to grow.

sack pack Empty sack pack Contains 50 noted empty sacks. Stackable.
plant pot Plant Pot Used to plant tree seeds. Also requires trowel and watering can.

Farming Shops
Farming shops are where you can purchase the necessary tools such as sacks, compost, pots and all farming tools. Their locations are detailed below. All farming shops are shown as a plant pot on the Runescape map.

Name Info Name info

The Leprechaun's Tool Shed
At each farming patch, you can find a leprechaun wandering nearby. This leprechaun will offer to hold your tools, buckets, and compost in his magical tool shed. He will also note any farming produce from allotments, as well as flowers, herbs, and fruit from trees, even if you can't yet grow the items at your farming level. This includes anything that you can farm (except logs), even if you did not harvest the items yourself. However, the "Falador farm" leprechaun will not note cabbage.
Farm Leprechaun
When you talk to the leprechaun, his tool shed storage screen will come up, and your inventory will change (see picture below). It shows which items you can store from your inventory (noted items included), and how many of each item are in the tool shed at the moment. It will only hold 1 of each item, except for scarecrows, buckets, plant cures, compost and supercompost. It will hold 5 scarecrows, 255 empty buckets, 255 plant cures, and 255 of both compost and supercompost varieties. If you have magic secateurs, you can store either them or normal secateurs, but not both, and likewise with the Watering Can and Magic Watering Can. The leprechaun found in the Herblore Habitat will also store Juju hunter, farming, and scentless potions, as well as the three god potions, and 30 of each of the respective vines for each potion.

Seeds

You can collect seeds by thieving from Master Farmers or from the Seed stalls. The Seed stalls do not yield herb seeds, while the Master Farmers do. Some monsters drop seeds. You can purchase seeds from other players. You can also buy various seed packets with reward points from the Pest Control minigame. Additionally, picking cabbage will give you occasional cabbage seeds, picking potatoes will give you potato seeds, etc.

You can get tree seeds from a bird's nest. Bird's nests are randomly dropped from trees while you are woodcutting. A bird's nest will drop behind your character and you will have to pick it up. Alternatively, bird's nests can be obtained as rewards from various minigames, especially the Miscellania Kingdom. If you search a bird's nest, there is a chance you will find a tree seed, a ring, a fruit tree seed or a bird egg. For those more of a Combat type, you may want to consider the Giant Mole. Killing the Giant Mole will give you mole skin and claws, which you can trade to Wyson the Gardener in Falador park in exchange for 1 bird's nest per mole item you turn in. Consult the Bestiary data for the Giant Mole for more details.

Compost

Patches that have been treated with compost are less likely to become diseased and will yield a better harvest. Supercompost magnifies both qualities. You can buy compost at farming stores, but not supercompost. To make your own compost or supercompost, you have to fill up a compost bin with organic material. These bins are located at every allotment patch. You will have to put 15 items in to fill the bin. Once you put in the first item, your character will automatically take more of the same items from your inventory and place them in the bin, until you run out or fill the bin. You can examine the bin once you have at least one item in there, and it'll tell you how many items (0-15) are currently in there. Once it is full, close the bin and wait for 40-50 minutes until it's rotten.

When you are able to re-open the bin, you can get 15 buckets of compost or supercompost out of it by simply emptying it. By clicking 'Empty' on the compost bin, all your empty buckets will start to fill in your inventory until you run out of empty buckets or the bin is empty of compost or supercompost. Rotten tomatoes are taken by hand. Low level crops will get you regular compost whereas items such as pineapples, tree roots and watermelons will get you supercompost. Use an item on the local farmer to find out what type of compost it will make. NOTE: You can also use the level 83 Lunar spell, Fertile Soil on a patch to have the same effect as super compost.

Allotments, Flowers and Herbs

To plant allotment seeds you will need to go to an Allotment patch. At allotment patches there is always a Compost bin, one Herb patch and one Flower patch. Locations are detailed below. You must have 3 allotment seeds to plant an allotment patch.

  • Allotment patches - Blue
  • Herb patches - Red
  • Flower patches - Yellow
  • Limpwurt patches - Orange
Picture Name Route Information
Farm Patch3 North of Catherby Teleport to Camelot and walk east, or use the Lunar Catherby teleport, or take the glider to White Wolf Mountain and descend to the west. There is a farming shop just east of the patch where you can buy everything you need.
Farm Patch2 South of Falador (North-west of Draynor) Teleport to cabbage patch using the Explorer's ring (3) and head north through the gate or to Draynor with an Amulet of glory, and go north-west through the cabbage patch. You can climb over the stile west of the allotment and walk south in the cow field to the north door of the farming shop.
Farm Patch5 North-west of Port Phasmatys Use your ectophial and go west past the undead farm or use the fairy ring teleport (ALQ) and head north, then east. When you arrive by ectophial, it's quicker to go to the shop first since the only way in is from the eastern door of the shop.
Farm Patch1 North of Ardougne Fishing guild teleport (Skills necklace or Lunar teleport), east past the windmill, then south-east, or Ardougne teleport, go through the northern gate past the farms and then east, or Ardougne cloak 2 (arrives at the patch). Visit the farming shop first. It's a long walk around the sheep.
Farm Herb Patch5 Troll Stronghold (Herb Only)* This patch can be accessed using the Trollheim Teleport and running from the top of the hill to the stronghold, or by using the fairy ring teleport network (AJR) and wearing climbing boots to climb the trail east. The normal Death Plateau hike is a much longer walk. This patch is only accessible after you finish My Arm's Big Adventure. Visit any bank first before you teleport, as there are no banks nearby. No cures are needed since herbs in this patch cannot get diseased. The leprechaun sells farming tools.
Farm Patch6 Harmony Island
(1 Allotment patch Only)
This patch is only accessible after starting The Great Brain Robbery. This patch is accessed via teleport from Brother Tranquility, located on Mos Le'Harmless Visit the bank in Mos Le'Harmless first before you teleport, as there are no banks nearby. There is no farmer at the patch to look after your crops for you. The Zombie Pirates can attack you whilst you are farming.
Burthorpefarm Burthorpe
(1 Potato patch Only)
This patch can be accessed by teleporting to Burthorpe using the Games Necklace (using the "Troll Invasion" option), using the Home Teleport from the normal spell book, or using the House Teleport (or modified House Teleport tab) to Burthorpe. There is no farmer to watch your patch, or tool leprechaun to gather your farming tools. There is a bank further north, or you can travel south towards Taverley along the river for a bank, where you can gather your supplies if necessary.
Wild Limpw Level 22 Wilderness Ruins
(1 Limpwurt patch Only)
Beware of Player-killers as this patch is located in level 22 of the western wilderness. Limpwurt seeds are normally planted in flower patches, but this spot is unique in that it ONLY accepts limpwurt seeds. After completing part of the Spirit of Summer quest, a "Goth Leprechaun" will be wandering nearby to store tools.

*The Tools leprechaun here also sells farming supplies, although the supply is best used for patches elsewhere.

Here is a list of what you can plant at Allotment patches, together with some information on how much XP you will receive, and some additional information. Growth times depend on whether a crop suffers from disease during its time in the ground, even when watched by farmers. The times are still shown here to serve as a guideline ONLY.

You can either take care of the plants yourself, as explained in the Intro or you can let the farmer close to that patch take care of them. However this is going to cost you something, not money but another farming product. Here is the list of farming products you have to pay to let the farmer watch your crops (farmers accept noted payments.)

Name Payment to Farmer
Potatoes 2 buckets of compost
Onions 1 sack of potatoes
Cabbage 1 sack of onions
Tomatoes 2 sacks of cabbage
Sweetcorn 10 jute fibres
Strawberries 1 basket of apples
Watermelon 10 leaves of curry

Sunchoke 15 yanillian hops
Fly trap 15 cadava berries

Flowers are located in the middle of all allotment patches. Some are meant to protect your crops from getting diseases, others are meant for herblore. You can check the Allotment section of this guide to see the exact locations of the flower patches (they have been marked yellow). You always plant flowers one at a time (one seed), and you always harvest a set amount. This means you will always harvest 1 nasturtium, 1 marigold, 1 rosemary, 3 limpwurt roots and 3 woad leaves (note you only get the XP as shown in the table and not 3 times that XP). The growing times depend on whether a crop suffers from disease during its time in the ground, even when watched by farmers, so the time shown here is a guideline ONLY.

Marigold onions, tomatoes and potatoes
Rosemary cabbage
Scarecrow sweetcorn
Nasturtiums watermelon
White lily all fruits and vegetables

Herb patches are often found in the same location as Allotments and Flower patches. Check the Allotment section of this guide to see the exact locations of herb patches (marked red). Herbs cannot be protected in any way or be looked after by the farmer (except for the Troll Stronghold patch), so you will have to do it all by yourself. If they get diseased you have to use a plant cure potion on them. If they die, use a spade to dig up the patch. Herb patches do not need to be watered. All herbs obtained from these patches will yield grimy herbs so you would also need the appropriate herblore level to clean them before you can use it, but you can still trade it to other players if you cannot clean them. Here is a list of all the herbs, the levels, and the XP you get from them. The growing times shown in this guide were originally posted by Jagex on the official RuneScape website, but are no longer showing. These times are provided as a guideline ONLY.

Scarecrows

Scarecrows are used to protect sweetcorn from getting eaten by birds (which is a disease). You have to build a scarecrow first (this earns 25 XP) and then put it on a flower patch. When you are finished with it, it can be dug up and banked for future use. Here are some instructions on how to make scarecrows and where you can find what you need.

  1. Use a empty sack on a straw bale (you can buy empty sacks at any farming shop; there are straw bales and haystacks at every farm, such as just above the farming shop in Ardougne).
  2. Then use the hay sack on a bronze spear (you can kill goblins for spears).
  3. Now use a watermelon on the bronze spear and hay sack as a head (you can only buy watermelon from other players).
  4. Finally use the scarecrow with the flower patch.

Hops

Hops patches are not in the same locations as allotment, flower and herb patches. You will need 4 seeds to plant a hops field. Jute is an exception, it only requires 3 seeds. Hops products (except for jute) are used for Brewing ales. Here is the list of all locations of the hops fields.

Picture Name Route Information
Farm Hops Patch1 North of McGrubor's Woods Teleport to Camelot, go west and when you reach a fence, go north of the coal tracks or use the Fairy Ring code ALS, go through the gap in the fence, and head north. You will pass Seers Village bank on the way.
Farm Hops Patch2 Yanille Teleport to Watchtower and go east, around the fence, and go west past the Wizards Guild or change your Watchtower teleport to inside Yanille (after Hard Ardougne Tasks), and go to the west side. An agility shortcut through the wall is north of the farming patch. Bank is east of the patch.
Farm Hops Patch3 North of Lumbridge farms Teleport to the Champions' Guild (Combat bracelet), or Lumbridge teleport, cross the northern bridge, and go north past the farms or take the canoe transport to the Champions' Guild canoe station. Bank in Lumbridge castle - top floor, or in the castle basement after completing at least the first part of the Recipe for Disaster Quest.
Farm Hops Patch4 Entrana Teleport to Draynor, go north and west through the fence, then south to Entrana Monks' boat or teleport to the cabbage patch with the Explorer's Ring and head south (deposit the ring in the deposit box at the boat) or use a balloon transport. Entrana does not allow weapons, armour, or staves. You can take runes, amulets, and rings for teleport.

Here is a list what you can grow at hops fields, together with levels and XP. The growing times shown in this guide were originally posted by Jagex on the official RuneScape website, but are no longer showing. Trees

You will need to have a trowel to plant the tree seed in a plant pot. You can buy these from the farming store, or you can use an empty plant pot on any gardening patch to fill it with dirt. Water the pot, and very soon it will grow into a sapling. You will need a spade to plant the sapling in a tree patch. Tree patches do not need to be watered. If a tree gets a disease you will have to use your secateurs on the diseased tree. After you have checked the health of your tree you can chop it down. Once it is gone you will see the tree stump like you normally do when woodcutting, but now you can use a spade on it to clear your patch for a new tree. You will receive tree roots, which are used for several things. Oak roots are used for brewing a woodcutting boosting ale, Axeman's Folly. Yew roots are used to make an herblore potion, Antidote+. Magic roots can be used on a spinning wheel to make an Amulet of Nature, or used to make an Antidote++ potion. Roots below magic can be spun into crossbow strings, or used on a compost bin to make supercompost.

Alternatively, you could pay a gardener 200gp and they will clear the patch for you, but you won't get the tree roots this way. Here are the five tree patch locations:

Picture Name Route Information
Farm Tree Patch1 Falador park Teleport to Falador and walk east until you reach the park or teleport to the Mining Guild with a Skills necklace, walk around the building, then north-west past the bank. Falador east bank is south of the park and north of the Mining Guild entrance.
Farm Tree Patch Taverley Taverley Teleport to Falador, go north through the members gate, and turn south or use the nearby balloon transport. Falador west bank is the closest walk.
Farm Tree Patch3 Varrock Castle Courtyard Teleport to Varrock and walk north into the east side of the castle courtyard. The Grand Exchange and both Varrock banks are within walking distance.
Lumby Tree Spot Lumbridge town Teleport to Lumbridge, go north and east of the castle. Bank in the Lumbridge castle - top floor, or in the Lumbridge basement after completing at least the first part of the Recipe for Disaster Quest.
Farm Tree Patch5 Gnome Stronghold Use one of the Spirit Trees or teleport to Al Kharid area (Amulet of glory or by enchanted broomstick to the Sorceress's Garden south of town or a Ring of duelling) and take the Gnome Glider to the Grand Tree. Head down the ladders to the ground floor, then south and west. There is a Bank located up some ladders north-east of the tree patch.

Here is a list of all trees, levels and XP. The growing times shown in this guide were originally posted by Jagex on the official RuneScape website. Jagex no longer provides growth times, since they depend on whether a tree suffers from disease during its time in the ground, even when watched by farmers. Bushes

Bushes can only be planted at bush patches. Bush patches never need to be watered, but can still get diseased. Here is a list of the four bush patch locations.

Picture Name Route Information
Farm Bush Patch1 West of Champions' Guild Teleport to the Champions' Guild (Combat bracelet) and head west, use canoe transport from one of three stations, or Varrock teleport, then go south out the gate and walk south-west to the Champions' Guild. Varrock west bank is convenient.
Farm Bush Patch2 Rimmington Cabbage teleport with the Explorer's ring (3) or teleport to Draynor or Falador and walk to Rimmington, use the Skills necklace teleport to the Crafting Guild, or use the balloon transport system. Alternatively you can set your house in Rimmington and use House Teleport to get to the patch faster. Banks in Draynor or Falador, unless you have started the Rocking Out quest and have access to the customs locker in Rimmington.
Farm Bush Patch3 South-west Etceteria Use enchanted lyre, go north-west to Rellekka's main harbour and take the east boat; go north, then east over the bridge (or use the Fremennik sea boots to take the shortcut on the bridge), then south. You may also use fairy ring code CIP, Miscellania teleport scrolls, or the Ring of Wealth Miscellania teleport and walk east over the bridge, then south. There is a bank north of Etceteria castle.
Farm Bush Patch4 South of Ardougne Use the Ardougne cloak 1 teleport to teleport to the Monastery south of Ardougne, or Ardougne teleport, go south-west past the bank and toward the clocktower monastery or use the fairy ring teleport (DJP) and run west past the Tower of Life. Bank at Ardougne south first or in Zanaris.

Here is a list of all Bushes, levels and XP. The growing times shown in this guide were originally posted by Jagex on the official RuneScape website. Jagex no longer provides growth times, since that depends on whether a bush suffers from disease during its time in the ground, even when watched by farmers. The times are still shown here to serve as a guideline ONLY. Poison Ivy is the only bush that does not get diseased nor die. If you pick the berries and wait, or leave the bush and come back later, it will have produced more.

Seed Name Lvl to plant Seeds

*Poison ivy bushes cannot become diseased as they are already poisonous to begin with!

You can either take care of the plants yourself as explained in the intro, or you can let the farmer closest to the patch take care of your plants. However this is going to cost you something, not money but another farming product. Here is the list of farming products you have to pay to let the farmer watch your crops (farmers accept noted payments.)

Specials

All special patches require a decent farming Lvl of 42 and higher. Special patches all have their own locations and for most of them there is no farmer to take care of your crops. It won't happen often, but your special patches can also get sick.

Picture Name Location Route Information
Farm Spirit Patch1 Spirit tree South-east Etceteria Use enchanted lyre, go north-west to Rellekka's main harbour and take the east boat. Go north, then east over the bridge, then south-east past the bush patch, or use fairy ring code CIP and walk east over the bridge, then south. There is a bank north of the Etceteria castle.
Farm Spirit Patch2 Spirit tree West of Draynor (east of Port Sarim) Cabbage teleport with the Explorer's ring (3) and walk south, or Draynor teleport (Amulet of glory) and walk west through the fence, then south. Bank at Draynor bank.

Farm Mushroom Patch Bittercap mushrooms, Morchella mushrooms West of Canifis Use the fairy ring teleport (CKS) or ancient magicks teleport to Kharyrll, then head west from Canifis. Bank in Zanaris or in Canifis east of the tavern.
Farming Patch Turnip Evil Turnip Near Draynor Cabbage teleport with the Explorer's ring (3) and walk north past the allotments, then east to the mansion or Draynor teleport (Amulet of glory), go north inside the gates of Draynor Mansion, and walk north-west. This patch is just above the Belladonna patch, and is not marked on the mini map. Bank at Draynor.

Here is a list of all specials with necessary farming levels and XP. The growing times shown in this guide were originally posted by Jagex on the official RuneScape website. Jagex no longer provides growth times, since they depend on whether a plant suffers from disease and is cured, and only the jade vine, calquat, spirit tree specials can be watched by a farmer. Thus, the growing times for those are a guideline ONLY.

Please note that belladonna and mushrooms do not grow back once you harvest them. The cactus and calquat tree do grow "fruits" again (cactus spines and calquats) like any other bush or fruit tree. The items picked from the plants are useful in herblore or cooking.

***After completing The Prisoner of Glouphrie and with a Farming level of 86 or above, two Spirit Trees can be planted at the same time in different patches.

Most special patches have no farmer to look after them for you with the exception of 4. Here is the list of farming products you have to pay to let the farmer watch your crops (farmers accept noted payments.)

Amulet of Nature

The Amulet of Nature is used to help you keep track of one of your farming patches. But do note that you can only have one amulet of nature at a time. You can bind the amulet to any patch simply by using it on the patch itself. You can manually check the status of your crop in this patch by rubbing the amulet. If you are wearing the amulet, you will receive a message (and hear a distinctive tone) telling you whenever your plant is either diseased, dead, or ready to pick. Note that your plant will only die if you do not react rapidly enough when it tells you the crop is diseased, or if you are logged out and miss the opportunity. Here are some instructions on how to make the Amulet of Nature:

  1. First smelt a gold bar from some gold ore and then use an emerald on the furnace (carrying the gold bar and an amulet mould), and make an emerald amulet.
  2. Now use a spun magic root on the amulet to finish it (magic roots require Lvl 75 farming to grow). This item is still tradeable.
  3. Use the spell that is normally used for enchanting Lvl 2 amulets (emeralds) on it.
  4. The finished (enchanted) Amulet of Nature is non-tradeable, but you can buy an emerald amulet strung with a magic root before it is enchanted (note that the string will look different.)

Scroll of Life

The Scroll of life is a reward from the Dungeoneering skill. It can be bought from the rewards trader for 10000 Dungeoneering tokens. Once used, the scroll will disappear, giving you the following permanent benefit: when harvesting patches (including dead ones), you have a 10% chance of receiving your seeds back. You will also gain a 5% chance of getting a tree seed back from a dead tree.

Note that when you are refunded a herb seed, it will not always be of the same type as the herb seed you initially planted.

Livid Farm

For those Farmers seeking an additional method of training, it might be worth checking out the Livid Farm on Lunar Isle. Utilizing quick-clicking and the Lunar Magicks spellbook, this fast-paced minigame involves helping out a local farmer, named Pauline Polaris, who has gotten in a little bit over her head! You must help Pauline with fertilizing and curing a new strain of the wild Jade vine, fixing up broken fences when aggressive Suqahs attack, and re-energizing Pauline when she becomes drained and exhausted.

For those dedicated Farmers who help out, you will gain Produce Points with which you can unlock up to 8 new Lunar spells, purchase 6 different "Wishes" that grant special abilities for a certain amount of time, as well as receive runes, Agility, Crafting, Construction, Farming and Magic XP. For more information, please refer to our Livid Farm Guide.

Tips

Farming multiple patches at once will raise your Farming levels much faster than staying put and watching one patch. Despite that, some players prefer to stay near one patch to watch that it doesn't become diseased, training other skills while waiting for it to grow (eg., fishing in Catherby, thieving in Ardougne). If you farm multiple patches, try to design a travel routine that will take you to all 4 allotment, all 4 bush patches, and whatever else you can squeeze in. Travelling farmers will lose a few crops to disease, but will level very fast. Here are a few tips to help make travelling farmers more effective.

  • It is recommended to use supercompost for all crops except trees and fruit trees (if you decide to pay the farmer to care for these). It is preferred by many to use regular compost for these trees and to pay the farmer because there is no chance of these crops dying when you do. Not using any compost may lengthen the growing time further, though for a daily fruit tree run this is possible as well.
  • Remember that using supercompost will increase your harvests, and decreases the chance for disease tremendously (provided you do not pay a farmer to care for them). Since you can't be everywhere at once, this is very important. Pineapples are easy to pick in the Karamja jungle just north of the dungeon to Iron Dragons. Speak to Arhein, the General Store owner on Catherby dock, to buy up to 40 per day. Jangerberries are on the ogre island just a short walk east of Castle Wars. Stock up on these while you wait for your crops to mature. You can also use tree roots (oak, willow, maple, etc) to make supercompost.
  • Lunar Magick provides a number of useful spells for farming. Among those handy teleports to Catherby and the Fishing Guild and the Fertile Soil spell effectively ensures you no longer need supercompost.
  • Also, stock up some supercompost in your bank or with the Tool Leprechauns. It's vital when you are planting bushes and trees if you are not paying the farmers to watch your crops. When you go to plant trees, bushes, and specialty crops, make sure you have your own supercompost, as farmers don't sell the good stuff (if you are using farmers to watch your bushes and trees, you don't need any compost).
  • Don't wear heavy armour or weapons. You will be running around a lot, and you will want your energy to last as long as possible.
  • Plan your travel routine to be most efficient. You should arrange the order in which you will go to the patches so that you can plan ahead for your bank stops. Think it through, pick your banks, and hit all the patches, and soon it will become habit. Keep track of planting and growing times. For example, while you are in Ardougne, farm the allotments, bush, and two fruit tree patches with one bank stop.
  • Take full advantage of alternative travelling methods described in the Getting Around guide. The Karamja calquat patch is not far from fairy ring CKR, the Ardougne allotment and the Falador tree patch can be reached using the skills necklace (to Fishing or Mining Guilds, respectively), the Rimmington bush patch is midway between the Crafting Guild (ballooning spot / skills necklace teleport) and the Port Sarim jail shortcut from Shantay Pass, etc. All of these are described in the Getting Around guide.
  • Don't forget your crops grow while you are logged out too. Do a farming round before logging out in the evening. The next day when you log back in you'll find your crops ready to be harvested.
  • Bring everything with you. Have all your tele runes, seeds, and tools with you. The fewer detours you have to make for banks, the faster you can go.
  • Use the Tool Leprechaun to note your harvests.* The Tool Leprechaun at Falador farm will not note ANY cabbages! The Tool Leprechaun at Herblore Habitat will not note vine herbs.
  • Use the Tool Leprechaun tool shed to store your farming equipment.
  • If you're fighting monsters that drop grimy herbs or crops and you are near a farming spot with a leprechaun, you can note the items to save space in your inventory!
  • Always replant your bushes. Check health XP is much better than picking XP. But don't dig up bushes unless you're replanting them. Picking XP is better than nothing.
  • Some patches are far from water sources. Fill your watering can every time you walk by a fountain, sink, or well. (Use bucket on well, use watering can on bucket.) If you have completed Fairy Tale Part III you will receive the Magic watering can which does not require refilling and can be stored with the Tool Leprechaun.
  • You can also get some farming experience by gardening in your house - check the Construction guide for more details.
  • Be aware of the Farming clock. Every five minutes your allotment and herb crops "tick" to the next "stage" of growth. This is a "cycle". The cycle for trees, fruit trees, bushes, and specialties is much longer. The cycle for flowers is half of the allotments. If you plant your seeds before the clock ticks, you will gain a little time, and you can water both stages in one visit. If your plants are diseased, you will have longer growing times as they will not evolve from the previous stage until you heal them. You will only need to water your allotments once during each stage. The "times to grow" shown in the tables of this guide were originally posted by Jagex on the official RuneScape website. Jagex no longer provides growth times, since growth rates depend on whether a crop, bush, or tree suffers from disease during it's time in the ground, even when watched by farmers.
  • If you are in search of that little bit more of farming experience, after the completion of Garden of Tranquility, you may pick a fruit from the White Tree you have planted in the castle garden; it's 12 XP per fruit picked.
  • Players who have completed Fairy Tale Part III, A Battle at Orks Rift may return to the cave near Gu'Tanoth (Fairy Ring Code ALP). South-east of the Fairy Ring is a searchable patch of mushrooms. Players who have 85 herblore can find 7 grimy ranarrs, 7 grimy dwarf weed, 7 grimy cadantine, 3 cadantine seeds, 2 dwarf weed seeds, and 2 ranarr seeds from the mushrooms. This can only be done once.
  • An Amulet of Farming is a cheap and easily obtainable alternative for an Amulet of Nature, however lacks the teleportation ability.
  • Speak to the farmer and ask him/her to rake your weeds. No more weeds! You can ask them to stop raking your weeds if you would like to gather them again.
  • If you grow Spirit Trees before getting 83 farming, you will only need to use a boost to plant it. Health-checking can be done without having 83 farming.
  • When you log into the game your current farming 'tick' is reset. This means that if you log in and out of the game while your crops are growing it can take longer for them to grow!

Happy Farming!

Request Assistance

If you find yourself a few levels short of making an item, or want to safely offer your skills to another player, the request assistance option will allow you to do so. Simply right click the player who has the skills that you need and request their assistance. If they accept, a pair of hands will appear in your bottom right corner, and you can plant, harvest, or do whatever they can. You keep the items, but they get the experience.

There are a few exceptions when being assisted in the Farming skill. The following can only be grown with the required levels.

  • All trees - including Calquat and Spirit
  • Any quest-related items, including Blindweed in the Rum Deal quest.

Skill mastery and Beyond

Cape of Achievement

Once you have mastered the skill and reached level 99 you may want to buy a Farming cape from Martin the master farmer in Draynor Village square. If you already have another 99 skill, or obtain another one while wearing the cape (unless you have it keepsaked), it will become a Farming cape (t).

Please refer to the Achievement Capes guide for more details.

farming Cape

After obtaining 99 Farming it becomes possible to obtain a Cultivated shard randomly, which can be combined with other shards from the other gathering skills (Divination, Fishing, Hunter, Mining, Woodcutting) to create a Gatherer's cape and Gatherer's hood. The cape has the same stats as a trimmed skill cape and the helm is purely cosmetic.

True Farming Mastery

Achieving 99 is the ultimate goal for many players, however the skill does not stop there. For players wanting to show off their dedication to a skill it is possible to obtain "True Mastery" by obtaining "120 farming" which is 104,273,167 XP. The Farming master cape can then be purchased from Martin the master farmer in Draynor Village square.

Farming master cape

It is worth noting that beyond level 99 there is no additional content for farming as the level increases are invisible so training the skill gets no faster. To work out your theoretical farming level check out our XP table.
