Mourning's Ends - Part 2

Difficulty: Master Requirements: Hard Length: Long

Start location: Arianwyn in Lletya

Requirements:

Items: Rope, Chisel, Mourner's outfit and either a Death talisman, an Omni talisman or a corresponding Tiara or Staff.

Suggested:

Skills: High Agility (around 70 should do)

Items: plenty of food, lots of Ardougne teleport runes, a Ring of life and a charged Lletya Teleport crystal. You may also want to bring a weapon and either armour or prayer robes (and Prayer potions) because you will be under constant strong melee attack during almost all of the quest. You can also use the Reverence aura to decrease the rate of prayer drain. An Agility potion helps with the handholds.

Monsters: Shadows (level 136) will attack you continuously during this quest. You'll run past some Dark Beasts (level 150, 90 Slayer required) on the way to the temple, too.

NPCs: Arianwyn, Eluned, Head mourner, Thorgel

Required: Mourner's outfit consisting of Gas mask, Mourner top, Mourner trousers, Mourner gloves, Mourner boots, Mourner cloak
Suggested: Ardougne teleport, Ring of life, some food or a Prayer potions, Lletya Teleport crystal

1: Start

Arianwyn tells you to investigate the excavation, so put on your mourner's outfit and head to the Mourners' Headquarters in west Ardougne. You will find the headquarters in the most north-eastern building. If you did not keep your mourner's outfit after completing Mourning's Ends Part 1, you can get another by killing a mourner on the Arandar path to the elven lands.

When you get to the Mourners' Headquarters, you must not be wearing anything but your mourner's outfit, so be sure you have room in your pack for equipment you want to put on later. Speak with the Head Mourner in the basement to receive a new key.

2: The Temple

Use your new key on the locked door to the west to enter the Temple of Light dungeon. Once you are through the locked door you no longer have to wear the mourner's outfit and can wield any robes or armour that you brought along - however you will need the mourner's outfit and key each time you use the locked door. Once through that door you need to head directly west past the Dark Beasts (level 150), then take the southern path. When you near the entrance to the Temple of Light you will get a cutscene. After the cutscene, search a nearby guard to receive his journal and a colour wheel. The colour wheel can be useful later on. Now head back to Arianwyn.

3: Obtaining the Crystal

Bank Bank Bank
Required: Six-piece Mourner's outfit, New key, Chisel
Suggested: Ardougne teleport, Ring of life, some food or a Prayer potions, Lletya Teleport crystal, six empty inventory spaces

After speaking with Arianwyn head back to the temple past the Dark Beasts. You need to go inside the front door of the temple now, being careful of the Shadow creatures (level 136). They have low LP and defence, and can be killed easily, but they hit hard and respawn quickly, so it's recommended to use the protect from melee prayer throughout the quest. Go through the entrance and go up to the stairs to the west. Once up these stairs move to the eastern wall to find the collection point. You will not get attacked here.

Pull the lever and then right-click to collect everything at the collection point. You should receive a yellow crystal and four mirrors. Once you've collected everything go west past the stairs. From there, run south past one pillar then go up the stairs to the west.

Note: You must have read the guard's journal before you can collect the contents of the collection point.

Once up the stairs head north to the pillar. Take the stairs slightly to the north-east leading down. You will end up on a small landing - this is a safe spot if you need to take break during the middle of the quest. For now, head up the stairs to the north. From here go as far to the east as you can. To the south is the black crystal. Use your chisel on it to take a sample. Head back to Arianwyn with your sample. Arianwyn will ask Eluned to make a new crystal for you and give you further instructions.

4: The First Two Doors - Blue and Pink

Bank Bank Bank
Required: Six-piece Mourner's outfit, Yellow crystal, Mirrors
Suggested: Ardougne teleport, Ring of life, some food or Prayer potions, Agility potion, teleport to a bank, Rope, either a Death talisman, Omni talisman or a corresponding Tiara or Staff, newly made crystal

Make sure you have in your inventory all four mirrors and the yellow crystal that you collected at the temple. Once you're ready, make your way back to the Temple of Light. The puzzle begins once you arrive. To solve this puzzle you will need to use your mirrors to redirect beams of light between various pillars in the temple. By using mirrors on the pillars and rotating them you will be able to direct light in four primary compass directions as well as vertically up or down. By using coloured crystals on pillars you will be able to change the colour of the light beam that passes through. Various coloured doors of light are situated throughout the temple. Refer to your colour wheel to see what colour lies directly opposite the colour of the door. In order to open a door of a particular colour direct a beam of light of the opposite colour onto the door.

Note: Using the maps that accompany this quest guide is highly recommended for clarity. Also, the correct way to rotate the mirror is shown for each step. If you are ever unsure which step a compass image refers to, hover your mouse over the picture to find out.

First and Second Doors

Blue Door step A. Enter the temple and go up the stairs directly to the west. Once up the stairs, there is a pillar to the east with a beam of light in it. Use a mirror on the pillar and then search it to get a selection of options in the chat box. Rotate the mirror to send the beam north.

Blue Door step A

Blue Door step B. Go to the pillar directly to the north and use a mirror on it. Rotate the mirror to send the beam west.

Blue Door step B

Blue Door step C. Run west one pillar and use a mirror to direct the beam south.

Blue Door step C

Blue Door step D. Follow the light beam south and stop at the first pillar you encounter. Use the yellow crystal on it, then continue running to the south. At the second pillar you encounter use a mirror on it to direct the yellow beam of light to the east.

Blue Door step D

Blue Door step E. You can now swing across the handholds to the east to reach a newly opened blue door. Take a sip of your agility potion if you brought one as failing this obstacle sends you to the first floor and deals 50 lifepoints of damage. Pass through the light door and search the chest within for two more mirrors and a cyan crystal. Once you're done, swing back along the handholds. Follow the beam west and north back to the pillar where you turned the light beam south Blue Door step C), collecting a mirror and yellow crystal along the way.

Pink Door step F. At the pillar where the beam turns south remove the mirror and put in the cyan crystal. Follow the cyan beam west one pillar and use a mirror to turn it north.

Pink Door step F

Pink Door step G. Follow the beam north one pillar and use a mirror to turn it back towards the east.

Pink Door step G

Pink Door step H. Follow the beam east one pillar and put in the yellow crystal. This opens the pink door to the east. Search the chest inside to obtain two more mirrors.

5: The Yellow and Cyan Doors

Bank Bank Bank
Required: Six-piece Mourner's outfit, Rope, space in your pack for Mirrors/crystals
Suggested: Ring of life, some food or Prayer potions, teleport to a bank, either a Death talisman, Omni talisman or a corresponding Tiara or Staff, newly made crystal

If you need to, this is a good time to restock your supplies and grab a rope if you do not already have one; you will need it for the next part of this quest. If you do go bank, upon your return run west up the stairs and then east to the collector. Skip this step if you did not bank. Pull the lever and right-click to re-obtain your mirrors and crystals. Repeat the steps A, B, F and G.

Third Door

Yellow Door step I. Go to the pillar immediately to the west of the pink door you opened in the last step. Use a mirror on it (remove your yellow crystal from the pillar if you did not bank) and rotate it until the light beam points upwards.

Yellow Door step I

Yellow Door step J. Using the ladder north of this pillar, head up one floor. Use a mirror on the pillar in front of you to send the beam west. The beam will pass through a pillar in a small room you cannot reach. This pillar has the useful effect of turning cyan light into blue and yellow to red, which will be necessary later on.

Yellow Door step J

Yellow Door step K. Head back down the ladder to your north-east. Once down the ladder, follow the cyan beam back to the pillar where you placed the cyan crystal. From there run south past a pillar and then take the stairs immediately to your west. Once on the top floor, run north then north-east and take the stairs leading down. From the landing, take the stairs leading up to the north. Run as far west as you can go then follow the narrow passageway north and west. Run north until you are in the most north-western corner of the room. There should be a pillar emitting a beam of blue light. Rotate the mirror in this pillar such that the light is sent vertically down.

Yellow Door step K

Yellow Door step L. For this step you need to head all the way down to the first floor and make your way to the north-western corner. To do this, run south and then east back through the narrow corridor. Run east past two pillars and take the stairs leading down to your south. On the landing platform take the stairs leading up to your south. Run south-west to the first pillar you see and then south from there - take the stairs leading down immediately to your east. From there, run past the first pillar to your north and take the stairs immediately to the east. You should now be back at the main entrance of the temple.

Yellow Door step L continued. From the main entrance, run north, west, north and west again as far as you can go, until you are in the north-west corner of the ground floor. You should see the blue light beam has made the light door passable - go through it. There is a pillar in the room that already contains a mirror - direct the blue light beam to hit the other yellow door.

Yellow Door step L

Yellow Door step M. Run south and east, raiding the chest at the end of the passage. You will receive two more mirrors as well as a fractured crystal. Run back along the passage and through the light door. Rotate the mirror again to re-open the yellow door to the east and exit the room.

Yellow Door step M

Fourth Door

Cyan Door step N. Run east, south, east and south again to return to the main entrance. Head back up the stairs to the west and then north to the pillar containing the cyan crystal. Replace the cyan crystal with the yellow crystal. Follow the steps outlined in Yellow Door step K to return to the north-west corner on the top floor.

Once in the north-west corner of the top floor, rotate the mirror to direct the now red light beam to the south.

Cyan Door step N

Cyan Door step O. Follow the red light beam all the way to the south-west corner. Use a mirror on the pillar there and direct the beam downwards.

Cyan Door step O

Cyan Door step P. Once you have done this, you need to go down one floor. To do this, run north and go east immediately through a narrow winding corridor. After getting out of the corridor, run east and at the first pillar turn south. Take the stairs leading down to the east. From there, run south to the wall, west to the first pillar you meet and then go a few steps north. There should be a low wall to the west - climb over it.

low wall

Cyan Door step P. After climbing over the wall, secure your rope to the rocks on the western side of the hole in the floor. Climb down. Run west and pass through the light door to the south. Raid the chest to obtain a blue crystal.

Now is a good time to restock on supplies if you need to.

6: Splitting the Light

Bank Bank Bank
Required: Six-piece Mourner's outfit, Rope, space in your pack for 10 Mirrors and 4 crystals
Suggested: Ring of life, some food or Prayer potions, teleport to a bank, Lletya Teleport crystal, either a Death talisman, Tiara or Staff, newly made crystal

Fifth Door

It is recommended you now return to the collection point and pull the lever to retrieve all the mirrors and crystals. You will need to set up a few parts of the puzzle again, however, that is much easier than manually retrieving each crystal and mirror from their individual pillars. If you banked, return to the temple, run west up the stairs and east to the collection point. If you did not bank, run east along the passage and climb up the rope. Climb over the wall to the east then run north, east and north to the collection point. Once at the collection point, pull the lever and then right-click to retrieve all the crystals and mirrors. You should end up with ten mirrors and a fractured crystal, blue crystal, cyan crystal and yellow crystal.

Light Door Five step Q. Follow all the blue door steps above to open the first blue door. Once you've entered the blue light door place the blue crystal in the pillar there.

Light Door Five step R. Exit the room and swing back across the handholds. Grab the mirror in the pillar to the west and the yellow crystal in the pillar to the north. Run to the next pillar to the north and rotate the mirror so that the beam is directed vertically upwards.

Light Door Five step R

Light Door Five step S. Now you need to head back to the top floor. To do this, run south past a pillar and then take the stairs immediately to your west. Once on the top floor, run north then north-east and take the stairs leading down. From the landing, take the stairs leading up to the north. Head to the first pillar to the north-east. The beam will not be visible until you use a mirror on the pillar and rotate it. Direct the beam to the south.

Light Door Five step S

Light Door Five step T. This beam will travel through two walls - you will have to find a way around them. Go down the stairs to the south-west leading to the landing platform. Run up the stairs to the south and head to the first pillar to the south-east. Place your fractured crystal in this pillar. You will get a message that the smooth side of the crystal faces north. Make a note of that as it will be important later on. You should now have four light beams.

four beams

Light Door Five step U. Go south one pillar. Use a mirror on it and direct the light beam to the east.

Light Door Five step U

Light Door Five step V. Follow the light beam east to the corner and use a mirror on the pillar there. Rotate the mirror to direct the beam down.

Light Door Five step V

Light Door Five step W. Run west and north back to where the light beam splits into four. Follow the western beam one pillar to the west. Use a mirror on the pillar and direct the light beam down.

Light Door Five step W

Light Door Five step X. Now you need to head back down to the ground floor and find where this second beam has gone. To do this, run to the south and go down the stairs to the east. Run north past one pillar and again go down the stairs to the east. You should be back at the main entrance. From the main entrance run south and then west as far as you can. You should see a pillar with a green beam of light sticking out of it vertically. Use a mirror on this pillar and direct the green beam to the south.

Light Door Five step X

Light Door Five step Y. Run to the south wall and use a mirror on the pillar there. Direct the green beam to the east.

Light Door Five step Y

Light Door Five step Z. Follow the green beam east and pass through the light door at the end. Inside this room you should see a pillar with a blue beam sticking up vertically. Use a mirror on this pillar and direct the blue beam at the northern yellow door.

Light Door Five step Z

Light Door Five step Z continued. Go through the northern door and collect your final three mirrors and a second fractured crystal from the chest.

7: The Final Pillar

Bank Bank Bank
Required: Six-piece Mourner's outfit, space in your pack for 13 Mirrors and 5 crystals
Suggested: Ring of life, some food or Prayer potions), teleport to a bank, Lletya Teleport crystal, either a Death talisman, Tiara or Staff, newly made crystal

The last pillar requires three beams of coloured light to hit it simultaneously. For it to open we need a blue beam from the north, a red beam from the west and a green beam from the south.

Click here to see a map for the
Sixth Door

Final Pillar step AA. Exit the room with pink and yellow doors and follow your green beam back to its source. From there run east and north back to the main entrance. Go up the stairs to the west and east to the collector. Pull the lever to collect all your mirrors and crystals once again. Make sure you have thirteen mirrors and five crystals in total. Repeating Blue Door step A, use a mirror to send the nearby pillar's beam north.

Final Pillar step AA

Final Pillar step BB. Run to the pillar to the north and use a mirror to direct the beam downwards.

Final Pillar step BB

Final Pillar step CC. Run south to the collector and go down the stairs to the west. Go north to the first pillar - you should see the beam sticking up vertically from the pillar. Use a mirror on the pillar; you cannot rotate this mirror so the beam will automatically be directed to the west.

Final Pillar step DD. Note: This part is extremely important. Move west one pillar. Place your newest fractured crystal in the pillar; you should get a message saying the smooth side faces east. There will be four beams of light radiating outwards from the pillar. If you do not see four beams you are using the incorrect fractured crystal and you must switch it.

Final Pillar step DD

Final Pillar step EE. Once this is done, run west north and east to the first pillar. There should be a beam coming from the south. Use a mirror on this pillar and direct the beam vertically up.

Final Pillar step EE

Final Pillar step FF. Now you need to return to the second floor. To do this, run west south and east to reach the pillar containing the fractured crystal. From there, run east and south to return to the main entrance and go up the stairs to your west. Next, run north one pillar, west one pillar, north one pillar and east to the pillar with a beam sticking out of it. Place the yellow crystal in this pillar.

Final Pillar step GG. Climb up the ladder to the north and use a mirror on the pillar you emerge in front of. Direct the beam to the west. The pillar in the enclosed room to the west will turn the beam red.

Final Pillar step GG

Final Pillar step HH. Now you need to reach the north-west corner of the top floor once again, using the same route as before (Yellow Door step K.), to find the red beam. Use a mirror on the corner pillar to direct the beam south.

Final Pillar step HH

Final Pillar step II. Follow the red beam south and use a mirror on the first pillar you encounter. Rotate the mirror and direct the red beam east. A fixed mirror in the pillar to the east reflects the red beam downwards for you.

Final Pillar step II

Final Pillar step JJ. Time to tackle the second beam. Run north and head east through the narrow corridor. Continue running east and head south down the stairs to the landing platform. Go up the stairs to the south. Go slightly west and south, heading down the stairs to the east. From there, go north past a pillar and head down the stairs to the east. You should now be back at the main entrance. Run north and west to arrive back at the pillar with four light beams. Go south and place the other fractured crystal in the first pillar you arrive at.

Final Pillar step KK. Go to the pillar directly to the east. Use a mirror on the pillar and it will automatically direct the beam vertically upwards. It cannot be rotated. Now head two pillars to the west and use a mirror to direct the beam vertically upwards there as well (this mirror can be rotated - make sure the light beam is correctly directed upwards).

Final Pillar step KK

Final Pillar step LL. You need to head up to the third floor once more. To get there, run all the way east and then north to arrive at the main entrance. Go up the stairs to your west and run south past a pillar then up the stairs to the west. Use a mirror on the first pillar to the north. Rotate the mirror so that a green beam is directed west. If you don't see a green beam it's not the correct pillar. A fixed mirror in the pillar to the west directs this downwards for you.

Final Pillar step LL

Final Pillar step MM. Time for the last beam. Go to the pillar at far eastern end of that hallway. Use a mirror on the pillar and it will automatically direct the beam west. This mirror cannot be rotated. Go to the first pillar to the west and use a mirror to direct the beam north.

Final Pillar step MM

Final Pillar step NN. Run west and north to go down the stairs there. You will end up on the landing platform. Go up the stairs to the north. From the stairs, run north and east to the pillar there. It should have a beam passing through it, south to north. Use your last mirror on this pillar to direct the beam west.

Final Pillar step NN

Follow the beam one pillar to the west and place the blue crystal in it. Fixed mirrors once again reflect the beam downwards for you.

8: Thorgel & the Death Altar

Bank Bank Bank
Required: Six-piece Mourner's outfit, newly made crystal, either a Death talisman, Tiara or Staff
Suggested: Ring of life, some food or Prayer potions, teleport to a bank, Lletya Teleport crystal

All three of the coloured beams have now been directed appropriately. Now go down the stairs to the south-west and you will be on the landing platform once more. This time, however, go down the stairs to the west. The cyan door at the bottom of the stairs is now open - pass through it. Rotate the mirror in the pillar with the red beams and direct the light west.

to Death Altar

This completes the final pillar, opening the door to the Death Altar.

Follow the beam west and step through the triple door to view a short cutscene with Thorgel the dwarf. Once here you also unlock a shortcut - a tunnel behind the altar slab which leads to the dwarf area in the Underground Pass, which can be used to reach Isafdar.

Important: If you have to leave for any reason, don't forget to rotate the red beam to the east to unlock the cyan door again. If you teleport out without doing so, you will have to run through the Underground Pass and take the shortcut or redo the entire final light puzzle to get back.

to Temple of Light

Thorgel will give you a list of items. If you collect all the items on the list, he will give you a free death talisman. Collecting the items is rather time-consuming and entirely optional. It is far easier to simply purchase a death talisman from the Grand Exchange. If you wish to collect the items anyway, click on "Show" below for more details.

Thorgel's List - Hide / Show

The list consists of the following items:

Item 3 - A key:

  • Jail key - Dropped by Jailer in Taverley dungeon
  • Dusty key - Given by prisoner in Taverley dungeon or at its spawn in Taverley dungeon

Once you have a talisman, use it to enter the Death Altar. Inside, use the newly made crystal that Eluned made for you on the altar to charge it. Finally take it back to the black crystal on the third floor. To get there, rotate the red beam again to open the cyan door to the east. Go up the stairs to the east and then go up the stairs to the north. Run all the way east and south to reach the outcrop of black crystals. Use the charged newly made crystal on the outcrop.

After you have done all of this, return to Arianwyn. He will give you a crystal trinket that allows access to the temple via the front door. Congratulations, quest complete!

Tips, Tricks & Notes

  • If you die and lose mirrors or crystals pull the collector lever and they will appear in the tray along with any others that have been placed.
  • Should you lose your new key, simply search the Head Mourner's desk to obtain a new one.
  • If you have good armour and a comfortably high constitution level, bring a rope, a death or omni talisman (or corresponding tiara or staff), and the newly made crystal with you before beginning the puzzle. You will save yourself a couple bank trips this way.
  • You cannot use the abyss as a shortcut to get to the Death Altar until after the quest is complete.
  • If you need extra food or prayer potions you can bring a familiar with you during the quest. Be warned, however, there are no summoning obelisks nearby to recharge your summoning points.
